No word on if the epic Elton John number "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" will be played at some point (my money is on yes, yes it should be), but this Friday around lunchtime 790 The Zone will be holding a funeral for the soon-to-be recently departed team. They've coordinated this with the Luckie Marietta District and STATS ATL. More info can be found on the Facebook invite page. Yes, I'm one of two people currently attending, but I believe that's because the page was put up about fifteen minutes ago.
The procession will start at 11:00, move down Marietta Street (right in front of the offices of Atlanta Spirit - Michael Gearon Jr.'s blubbering head should appear out of at least one window) and down to STATS. If you're wearing Thrashers gear, you're rewarded with a free lunch in braving the 90 degree heat.
Sure, file this away in the "worst scheduling ever" bin - 11:30 on a Friday afternoon? No one'll be able to come except for local employees and school teachers. The bigger issue here is why is 790 planning it? They've covered the Thrashers possibly three times in the last 11 years. Not to mention, the team's flagship station is 680 the Fan.
Oddly enough, Chris Thorburn will be at Brandsmart in Gwinnett Saturday to sign autographs and presumably add to his legend of speaking out.
