This is pretty fun. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told the Illegal Curve show that the new Winnipeg team will take over the Atlanta Thrashers franchise history as its own instead of the city's long-lost Winnipeg Jets records, which remain with the Phoenix Coyotes.
And that's a sad-ass franchise history you've now got there, friends. This furthers speculation that the team might somehow, crazily not be named the Jets. To which we chortle!
Look on the bright side, Winnipeg: you'll also inherit Atlanta's 2000, 2001, and 2003-2008 attendance figures.
The bookkeeping is technically accurate, I guess, since the Jets did indeed move to Phoenix. Now all we need is for the Coyotes to stop being bailed out and move to Atlanta, where they'll immediately be offered to Winnipeg in exchange for the Thrashers. Everybody wins.
Now feel free to retire Dan Snyder's number.
