It has been a very eventful couple of days at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The medal count lead has flip-flopped over the past few days and there have been shake-ups further down the list as well. Heading into Thurday, the United States leads the overall medal count with 81 medals, but China holds the lead in hold medals, with 36 against America's 34.

In third place, Russia has once again moved ahead of Great Britain with a flurry of podium visits over the past few days. Russia now has 52 medals, while the hold country has just 48.

Here is what the medal count leaderboard looked like heading into Thursday's events.

1. United States - 81 (34, 22, 25)
2. China - 77 (36, 22, 19)
3. Russia - 52 (11, 19, 22)
4. Great Britain - 48 (22, 13, 13)
5. Germany - 32 (7, 15, 10)

Already in 2012, Jim Furyk has suffered two epic collapses on the final holes of PGA Tour events. The first was the most notable, coming in the home stretch of the 2012 U.S. Open when it appeared as though he had the tournament sewn up. It is possible, however, that he could emerge from this week's final major of 2012 as the PGA Champion.

Adam Fonseca at SB Nation believes that Furyk may have it in him to achieve a large measure of redemption in South Carolina this week.

No, really; Jim Furyk might have a chance this week despite being one of the shortest drivers on tour and suffering a heartbreaking loss last week to Bradley. Kiawah Island will be the longest golf course in major championship history (measuring in at more than 7,600 yards), but Furyk's ability to navigate Olympic Club earlier this season at the U.S. Open proved his game can hold up against monster courses. The question won't be if Furyk can climb up the leaderboard this week; rather, it will be if he can stay at the top when it matters most.

Furyk would be the feel-good story of the year if he can hoist the trophy on Sunday. Let's hope he can beat the field and hold on for the big win.

On Monday, the Atlanta Falcons participated in a scrimmage against the Tennessee Titans at Coahulla High School. The Falcons got an opportunity to fully test out their passing game and they were very pleased with the results.

D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the Falcons ran 50 plays in two periods, the majority of which were passing plays. Four different Falcons quarterbacks had at lest four pass attempts. Matt Ryan completed 16 of 17 attempts, while Chris Redman completed six of six.

"I think we got a lot accomplished," Ryan said. "It was good for us to communicate against a different defense and see some different looks, to really make sure that we are on top of our assignments. It was really productive for us."

Falcons fans will get a chance to see that passing game soon enough as the preseason continues this week.

UGA fans and Georgians in general have a great reason to celebrate on Tuesday. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Georgia Bulldogs alum Allison Schmitt has not only captured the gold medal in the women's 200m freestyle to add to the United States medal count, but set an Olympic record in the process.

Schmitt beat runner-up Camille Muffat of France by nearly two seconds in the women's swimming final on Tuesday, setting a new Olympic mark of 1:53.61. Muffat finished in 1:55.58, while Bronte Barratt of Australia took the bronze with a time of 1:55.81. American Missy Franklin finished fourth, missing out on the bronze by 0.01 seconds.

The finals of the men's canoeing C-1 whitewater slalom took place on Tuesday at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Georgia had two competitors early in the event, as Erick Hurd of Woodstock and Jeff Larimer of Marietta both went to the XXX Olympiad to compete in both C-1 and C-2.

Unfortunately, neither Hurd nor Larimer were able to reach Tuesday's gold medal final, which was eventually won by Tony Estanguet of France, with a time of 97.06 seconds, well ahead of silver medal winner Sideris Tasiadis of Germany, who finished in 98.09. 2008 gold medalist Michal Martikan took the bronze on Tuesday with a time of 98.31 seconds.

Day 4 of the 2012 Olympic Games in London is well underway on Tuesday. The medal count race is definitely heating up, as the United States and China remain deadlocked in total medals. A big win for the United States in a marquee event on Tuesday has them gaining ground on China's gold medal lead.

Both the U.S. and China have 19 medals each, outpacing 12 from Japan and nine from France. The U.S. took the gold in the women's team gymnastics on Tuesday, a massive victory for the country, especially considering that China failed to medal in the event. Added to a shooting gold earlier in the day, the United States now has seven gold medals and is closing in on China's 10.

You can find a complete medal count and breakdown at SI.com.
