First batch of college football polls is out, the USA Today Coaches' Poll. As expected, Oregon solidifies its No. 1 spot while Auburn overtakes Boise State at No. 2. Alabama takes advantage of losses by Missouri and Michigan State to return to the top five, and LSU creeps one spot closer to the top ten by doing the only sane thing it's done all year: take a week off.
South Carolina holds steady amid the muck of losses, while Arkansas slips a spot by dropping 555 yards on Vandy. Somehow, Virginia Tech remains ahead of Mississippi St. Not only did Virginia Tech not play this week, they also lost to James Madison. Mississippi St. meanwhile, took care of business against the Kentucky Wildcats. Explain that.
Florida State drops from No. 16 to No. 24 after losing to NC State, while NC State itself turns up at No. 25. Baylor's victory over the 4-4 Texas Longhorns is somehow more impressive than the work done by NC State, as Baylor looks back at two-thirds of the ACC's representatives after sitting at No. 25 last week. The best team Baylor has beaten: Kansas State.
Among the also-considereds, the Maryland Terrapins, Miami Hurricanes, and Florida Gators somehow earned votes after beating Wake Forest, losing to Virginia, and snapping a three-game losing streak.
