Vanderbilt Commodores RB Zac Stacy was knocked unconscious in today's second quarter by a helmet-to-helmet shot from Florida Gators Lerentee McCray. After remaining motionless for several tense moments, he signaled positively to Vandy's crowd while being carted off the field. The Commodores are now down to their last two scholarship running backs, Wesley Tate and Kennard Reeves.
Helmet-to-helmet hits have been a hot topic around the NFL this season, but there haven't been many incidents in college football that have drummed up the same kind of controversy. This hit wasn't anywhere near as dirty as some of James Harrison's finest work, if it is indeed dirty at all, but it does appear McCray had a reasonable chance to avoid head-to-head contact.
And it's undeniable McCray led with his crown, not his face mask. That's unsafe for both parties, even though it's common all across modern football.
Stacy is currently at Vanderbilt Medical Center.
