Auburn Tigers QB Cam Newton has decided to enter the 2011 NFL Draft, a curious decision considering his lack of renown and the fact that nobody thinks he’s very good at football. The Heisman Trophy winner could be a top-10 pick or he could be drafted in the eff-it Tebow range — much will depend on what he can show NFL scouts regarding his pro adaptability.
He has the physical tools, with Ben Roethlisberger’s size but the mobility of a much smaller quarterback. He’s proven himself to be a winner and an on-field leader, though many teams will still have plenty of questions about just what transpired between the time he left Florida and arrived at Auburn, along with some of his incidents in Gainesville.
Newton was the surest bet to declare for the draft in all of college football this year. Now that he’s declared, mock drafts can start to feel a little bit more definitive.
