Georgia Bulldogs tight end Orson Charles was nominated for the 2011 John Mackey Award, which has gone to Dwayne Allen of the Clemson Tigers. Tyler Eifert of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish was also nominated.

Much more 2011 college football awards coverage here throughout the night.

Allen posted 47 catches for 571 yards and eight touchdowns, clearly better than Charles' 44 catches for 572 yards and five touchdowns. Meanwhile, Eifert had 57 for 713 and five. So we're picking based on touchdowns, I guess. Montee Ball should've won the Mackey Award.

Actually, there's a Furman defensive end named John Mackey. That guy should've won the Mackey Award. Did you know Furman almost beat the Florida Gators, whose offensive coordinator, Charlie Weis, is now the head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks? Isn't that amazing?

The evening's only other award of local interest: the Maxwell, which will be presented by Herschel Walker on ESPN.
