All you need to know about the Mark Richt-to-Texas A&M Aggies rumors that have flourished out of nowhere: the Georgia Bulldogs coach is up for a contract extension after winning the SEC East, and has thus been advised to listen to offers. A&M's delayed hiring Houston Cougars coach Kevin Sumlin for a reason, and if they really think they can swipe Richt, then there you go.

Where's all this coming from, though? At first, it was just message board stuff, but here's a legit source:

Brent Zwerneman@BrentZwerneman Finally got confirmation the Mark Richt talk is legitimate. Should A&M hire him, Bama DC Kirby Smart likely would head home to Georgia.

Not legit as in WELCOME TO AGGIELAND, PRINCIPAL YELL LEADER RICHT, but legit as in somebody important in College Station thinks there's a chance here*.

The Smart part lines up, too, since he's been the presumed heir for literally years now. Some have speculated Richt might retire within a year or two, but a move out to another school in the SEC wouldn't really be a retirement, now would it. Some have also speculated he might not be getting along with new athletic director Greg McGarity, but ... A&M just fired Mike Sherman in the driveway of a recruit's house. So.

Hey, who knows. Kansas hired Charlie Weis.

* There is not.
