Julio Jones is going for the sweep over A.J. Green at the 2011 NFL Combine, having already beaten him at the 40-yard dash and on media day. After Green put in a disappointing 34’ 5" at the vertical jump, which was an inch and a half below the average turned in by last year’s wideout class, Jones beat him by four inches.
Both looked good during catching drills, though Green short-armed a couple of passes during the gauntlet drill (the one where receivers run parallel to a battery of quarterbacks, alternating between catching on the right and left). Green also made a great deep catch of a Ryan Mallett pass — not many have been able to run down Mallett’s bombs so far today.
Only Al Davis types draft based on workout numbers. Tape don’t lie. While Green is still expected to be picked ahead of Jones, the distance between the two is starting to shrink little by little.
