March Madness Bracket Upsets: Morehead State, Richmond, Gonzaga Take Down Big Targets

Morehead State basketball, along with Richmond and Gonzaga, scored the biggest upsets of the opening (“second”) round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament bracket. Most of the action occurred early on in the day, when there was also a flurry of buzzer-beating game-enders, but it was a very fitting opening (“third”) day of March Madness indeed.

Finally known for something besides the maturity-check name of their university, Kentucky’s Morehead State beat No. 4 seed Louisville on what appeared at first to be a hard foul, advancing to take on fellow upstart Richmond of Virginia, who gave No. 5 seed Vanderbilt yet another early tourney exit, their third in a row.

Late Thursday night, Washington’s Gonzaga beat up on No. 6 seed St. John’s, making it two Big East teams to fall and fall hard in the early going.
