The 2011 NCAA Tournament has reached the Elite Eight, with four of six Sweet 16 teams from Southeastern conferences advancing. That number’s guaranteed to fall by at least one on Sunday, as No. 2 UNC and No. 4 Kentucky play each other in the East region for a shot at the Final Four after the Cats upset No. 1 Ohio State and the Heels blew out No. 11 Marquette.
On Saturday (we’re doing this backwards!) No. 2 Florida opens the round against No. 8 Butler, a team nobody in particular wants to play. Both squads turned in games much closer than their final scores indicated in the Sweet 16 round, with Florida beating No. 3 BYU in OT and Butler holding off No. 4 Wisconsin.
On the other side, No. 5 Arizona chases its upset of No. 1 Duke with a game in friendly Anaheim against No. 3 UConn. Of course, Cali didn’t help No. 2 San Diego State.
And back to Sunday! Speaking of a team nobody wants, No. 11 VCU takes on the tourney’s highest-seeded remaining team in what very well could be a matchup of the two best teams left, based on how they’ve played so far in March Madness.
