The SEC has been busy during its annual conference meetings in Destin Florida. While Football continues to look at the controversial subject of oversigning, the basketball coaches have essentially agreed to scrap divisional play for next season and seed all 12 teams 1-12 in the conference tournament. The plan would call for the top four teams to receive byes in the tournament.
The momentum behind this was made after Alabama won the western division with a 12-4 conference record but then was left out of the NCAA tournament while both Georgia (9-7) and Tennessee (8-8) were both selected out of the East.
If there is any problem with the format, it comes in the schedule. While the SEC will implement the single division for basketball next season, the current schedule format will remain the same but will be looked at in advance of the 2012-2013 season. Possibilities would include expanding conference play to 18 games.
The plan is expected to be voted on by the athletic director's later this week.
