Orson Charles' Eligibility Not In Question, Says NCAA

Former Miami booster Nevin Shapiro named the Bulldogs junior among the high-school recruits with whom he had improper contact, but the NCAA says Charles' eligibility is unaffected.

Former Miami Hurricanes booster Nevin Shapiro named Georgia Bulldogs tight end Orson Charles among the football recruits with whom he had improper contact, as detailed in this Yahoo! Sports report. Shapiro alleges he gave Charles a tour of his home in Miami Beach while Charles considered signing with the Hurricanes, which constitutes "impermissible contact." Two sources, says Yahoo!'s Charles Robinson, corroborated Shapiro's statements about Charles.

The University of Georgia released the following statement in response to the Yahoo! report:

The University of Georgia is aware of the article mentioning Orson Charles and has been in communication with the NCAA. There are no issues with UGA or eligibility issues with Orson Charles. UGA will have no further contact regarding this matter.

It appears as though Charles will be allowed to continue his Bulldogs career unabated. In his two seasons, the Tampa, Florida native has caught 49 passes for 796 yards and five touchdowns. In 2010, he ranked fourth on the Bulldogs in receiving yards (422) and tied three other players for fourth in touchdowns (2).
