2012 Georgia Football Recruiting: VaTech's Loss Of O-Lineman Greg Pyke Is Dawgs' Gain

With concerns over Georgia’s offensive line depth taking up an inordinate amount of the summer conversation, the Dawgs have placed a high priority on shoring up the line with the 2012 recruiting class. That effort involved first-year line coach Will Friend traveling up to Baltimore to snag offensive tackle Greg Pyke (6’5", 315) from Boys’ Latin High School.

With a three-star ranking from Rivals and four stars from Scout, Pyke was pursued by programs all up and down the east coast, including Virginia Tech, Penn State and Maryland, as well as Michigan State and Louisville. Depending on whom you ask, Georgia might have swiped Pyke right from under the Hokies’ noses: The Baltimore Sun says Pyke and his family were on their way to Blacksburg when they heard a radio report about a gunman that had put the entire VT campus on lockdown. The Pykes kept driving and headed to Athens, where Greg says he felt right at home, and the Dawgs ended up with a commitment the very next day.
