2012 Georgia Football Recruiting: Who's Up For Another Tight End? Meet Ty Smith

Say this for Ty Smith (6’3", 228), a tight end at Colquitt County High in Moultrie, Ga.: The kid’s got confidence. Georgia’s roster has been stocked at tight end for years, and next year they’ll have Orson Charles, Arthur Lynch and 2011 “Dream Team” member Jay Rome jockeying for playing time — yet Smith still decided to throw his lot in with the Dawgs, turning down an offer from Florida to do so.

Then again, considering that Smith says he’s been a Georgia fan since he was a child, perhaps it’s not so surprising. The three-star recruit has drawn comparisons that should have Dawg fans very optimistic about his prospects: His coaches describe him as both a “flex end” hybrid player who can both play tight end and split out wide, much like Orson Charles (who’s become an indispensable part of Georgia’s offense over the last couple seasons), but Colquitt County head coach Rush Propst added that that’s also a characteristic of Dallas Clark, the Indianapolis Colts’ Pro Bowl tight end and frequent target of QB Peyton Manning. So while the trip up the depth chart may be a little steep once Smith arrives on campus next summer, it looks like he’ll have the skill set to compete.
