Hutson Mason Won't Transfer, Will Redshirt Instead

Hutson Mason, a highly-touted QB recruit from Marietta, has decided not to transfer in an effort to get more playing time.

The 6'3 195 QB was supposed to take a redshirt year as a true freshman in 2010, but that changed when Zach Mettenberger was kicked off for a violation of team rules and Logan Gray was moved to WR.

As a sophomore, he was Aaron Murray's back-up last season, completing 18-30 passes for 254 yards and 2 TD's.

But with Murray firmly entrenched as the starter, and with possibly two years of eligibility remaining, Mason was facing the possibility of never having a chance to become a collegiate starter if he stayed at Athens.

But instead of transferring, he'll take a redshirt year next season, which would at least give him the chance to start in 2014 if Murray stays all four years at Georgia.

Mason's decision means that Christian Lemay, another highly-touted QB who red-shirted last season, will probably be in line to become Murray's backup as a redshirt freshman in 2012.
