Sanders Commings won't see jail time from his arrest for domestic dispute and battery following an altercation with his then-girlfriend in downtown Athens January 21. But after the Athens-Clarke County Magistrate Court ruled on his case Tuesday, his punishment from the state of Georgia, the University of Georgia and the Bulldog football team is now complete, and it's lengthy:
- The state of Georgia: Commings pled guilty to a charge of simple battery and a charge of disorderly conduct on Tuesday. He was sentenced to 12 months probation, a $200 fine (plus court fees), 40 hours of community service, no contact with the victim, anger management counseling, and must undergo a substance abuse evaluation. He also subject to random drug and alcohol screenings by the court.
- The football team: The senior cornerback has been suspended for Georgia's first two games this fall (vs. Buffalo, at Missouri). Following the departure of Brandon Boykin for the NFL and the dismissal of Nick Marshall and Chris Sanders, both cornerbacks and rising sophomores, this puts the Dawgs in a very thin situation at DB early in the season. And if Branden Smith's arrest creates another suspension, the Dawgs are likely without both projected starting corners.
- The University: Commings was also sentenced to six months of probation as a UGA Office of Student Conduct, and was given an additional 25 hours of community service, another alcohol education class, and another anger management class.
