During last week's victory over Vanderbilt, Georgia Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt surprised fans by inserting walk-on quarterback Parker Welch in the fourth quarter instead of Christian Lemay. According to the school's athletic department website, Lemay is listed as the No. 3 quarterback on Georgia's depth chart. Welch is unlisted. Richt hinted that Welch's longer tenure within the program helped influence his choice.
Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo "is basically allowing [them] to compete on a weekly basis to see who earns the right to get in the game first" Richt told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Parker has been doing well. Parker has been in the system a little longer, and he’s very diligent in the way he prepares as well. Coach Bobo felt like he earned the right to go in first."
It's unclear if the pecking order from the Vanderbilt game would remain intact if starter Aaron Murray had to exit the field during a close game. The Bulldogs steamrolled the Commodores, 48-3, and the game was well in hand when Welch entered. However, it does seem clear at this point that Richt hopes to redshirt junior Hutson Mason.
