Georgia Bulldogs tight end Jay Rome could be back on the basketball roster in time for the start of SEC play on Jan. 9. Rome, a 6'6, 254-pound forward with the basketball team, played in seven games last season, averaging 0.4 points and 1.0 rebounds per game.
According to Marc Weiszer of Dog Bytes Online, Bulldogs men's basketball coach Mark Fox is okay with the plan to wait until conference games begin to play Rome:
"I think Jay would like to play again," Fox said Tuesday. "He obviously has to stay healthy and be OK in the classroom. The plan is for him to continue to play. We realize that won't be until January. We'll wait patiently."
Rome has not been focusing completely on football. Fox says that the forward/tight end told him that he has been shooting some jumpers recently:
"I said, ‘Well, you won't shoot any for our team. You're going to rebound,'" Fox said. "We were just joking because he is a pretty good shooter.'"
For the football team this season, Rome has two catches for 36 yards.
