The Georgia Southern Eagles were giving the Alabama Crimson Tide a scare by trailing only 24-14 at the half, but Alabama had started to pull away by outscoring Georgia Southern 14-7 in the third quarter and currently lead 38-21 midway in the fourth quarter.
To star the third quarter the Alabama defense forced Georgia Southern to punt on a three-and-out. Then Alabama took their offense down the field on a lengthy 10-play, 85 yard drive which resulted in an A.J. McCarron pass complete to Brad Smelley for 34 yards to put Alabama up 31-14.
Georgia Southern's lone second half score came on a 95-yard kickoff return by Laron Scott to cut the lead back to 31-21, but Alabama then responded on a nine-play 74 yard drive that was all Trent Richardson who ran for 42 yards on the drive before capping it off on a 1-yard touchdown run to put Alabama up 38-21.
