College of Charleston, coached by SoCon Coach of the Year Bobby Cremins, gets its 2011 Southern Conference basketball tournament underway today, drawing first-round winner Elon. The Phoenix topped Citadel, 85-74 on a 21-point, 10-assist night by Chris Long.
The Cougars blow out Elon 85-67 in their only regular-season meeting this year.
Elsewhere on yesterday’s bracket action, the Georgia Southern Eagles gave one away against Appalachian State. Gave one away? Southern lost 65-57 while missing eight free throws. Still, a good effort by the lowly Eagles to make it competitive as App State’s Donald Sims racked up 20 points.
Furman smoked Samford, 61-48, led by Jordan Miller’s 23 points, while UNC-Greensboro bested Davidson, 71-64, on the strength of a Trevis Simpson double-double.
