The Georgia Southern Eagles brought their 2012 college football record to 1-1 after losing to The Citadel Bulldogs, 23-21. The Bulldogs had lost five straight to the Eagles and nine consecutive Southern Conference games dating back to 2009.

According to the StatesboroHerald.com, Georgia Southern was clearly the better team, but mistakes ultimately cost the Eagles the loss:

So, it probably shouldn't come as a surprise that in a game that was thoroughly dominated by GSU statistically on Saturday, the Eagles lost to The Citadel on account of a pair of missed field goals and a pass interference call on 4th-and-3 on the Bulldogs' eventual game-winning drive.

The game was played mostly on the ground as Georgia Southern rushed for 307 yards to The Citadel's 168 yards. With respect to total offense, the Eagles amassed 364 yards to the Bulldogs 253 yards while also dominating the time of possession as well.

Georgia Southern entered the game ranked third in the Football Championship Subdivision.
