Samford Vs. Georgia Southern: John Stevenson taking advantage of playing time

Eagles LB John Stevenson contributed to a big play that preserved the team's win over Elon last weekend.

Georgia Southern linebacker John Stevenson had a hand in a play that preserved the team's 26-23 win over Elon last weekend. After a completion that had Elon in easy field goal range late in the quarter, Stevenson was able to get his hands on the ball and help force a fumble.

The play was a big one for the Eagles, and particularly for Stevenson, who had to wait for his shot on the field.

"I didn't get on the field (as a position player) last year," Stevenson said. "But I didn't get discouraged. I came out of the spring as a starter. I attribute a lot of that to my faith in God, hard work and determination."

Stevenson attempted to walk on to the team in 2008, but was cut after his tryout. He persevered and eventually earned a spot on the team, and after beginning his career as a safety, he was moved to linebacker.
