With the 2012 Southern Conference schedule starting to wind down, the Georgia Southern Eagles find themselves in first place with a 6-1 league record. The Eagles can guarantee themselves at least a share of the conference title with a win over Appalachian State this weekend, which would then force Wofford to win out to salvage a tie. The Eagles defeated the Terriers 17-9 on Oct. 13.
Wofford has games against Samford and Chattanooga remaining on its conference slate. Winning those two games, coupled with a loss by the Eagles to Appalachian State, would give the Terriers the league title outright.
A win over GSU by Appalachian State would also pull the Mountaineers even with the Eagles in the loss column, keeping them alive for a potential first-place tie.
The complete Southern Conference standings:
1. Georgia Southern (6-1 in league games)
2. Wofford (5-1)
3. Appalachian State (4-2)
4. Chattanooga (3-2)
T5. Samford (3-3)
T5. The Citadel (3-3)
7. Furman (2-4)
8. Elon (1-4)
9. Western Carolina (0-7)
