Villanova Football's Big East Rumors Could Hasten Georgia State's FBS Rush

Villanova Wildcats football is reportedly considering a move to the Big East, which would set the conference at 10 football teams now that the TCU Horned Frogs are on board. While the Big East has approximately 67 basketball teams, it still wouldn't have enough teams to field a conference championship game even if Nova comes aboard. Conferences need 12 teams for that.

Leaving aside the question of who in their right mind would sit through a Big East title game, Nova's football program jumping from the CAA would put pressure on the Georgia St. Panthers to try and move up a level well before they're ready. It's no secret State has made a goal of rapidly ascending into an FBS conference, but their targeted landing spot is filling up fast.

The Central Florida Knights are the Big East's reported fallback plan if Nova doesn't work out, leading one to conclude they'd also likely be the first choice for an eventual No. 11.

You might be surprised to learn Nova has a strong recent football history, winning the 2009 FCS National Championship. They were formerly in the part of the world now known as FBS until 1980, with their glory years coming in the 1930s and '40s.
