Virginia Tech won its eighth straight game, and eliminated the rest of the Coastal Division other than Miami from contention as the Hokies beat UNC 26-10 Saturday afternoon in North Carolina.
The Tar Heels scored first, and led 10-9 at halftime, but two Tyrod Taylor touchdown passes in the third quarter were more than enough for the Hokie defense.
Virginia Tech kicker Chris Hazley had a great day, kicking field goals of 52, 38, 26, and 23 yards, and converting on both extra points.
Taylor completed only 13 of 28 passes, but got the most out of the completions, passing for 249 yards, an average of 19.2 yards per completion. T.J. Yates was 18/33 for 197 yards and four interceptions.
Virginia Tech heads to Miami next week in a huge Coastal Division matchup. If the Hokies win, it will clinch a trip to Charlotte. The Hurricanes will need to win, and hope for a Virginia Tech loss to Virginia in the season finale.
North Carolina finishes its season with in-state rivals North Carolina State and Duke over the next two weeks.
