Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets QB Tevin Washington, filling in for injured starter Joshua Nesbitt, drove the Jackets into Virginia Tech’s red zone with 14 seconds to go, but threw an interception in the end zone by Hokies DB Rashad Carmichael to end the ballgame.
Virginia Tech has now all but clinched the ACC Coastal Division, plus carved out a slice of revenge against the Jackets. Last year Georgia Tech upset the No. 4 Hokies in Atlanta, killing VT’s faint national title hopes.
This is the best game Georgia Tech played all year. Considering Washington has never run the offense in meaningful competition, the fired-up road environment, and the fact that OH RIGHT Virginia Tech is a better team, the Jackets came 23 points closer than your correspondent thought they would. Al Groh’s defense played its best game yet, giving up only 21 points, its second-lowest total of the year.
Tech falls to 5-4, needing a win over the Miami Hurricanes, Duke Blue Devils, or Georgia Bulldogs to keep its 13-year bowl streak alive. The Hokies improve to 7-2, 5-0 in ACC play.
