Nebraska Cornhuskers coach Bo Pelini isn’t preparing to interview for the open Miami Hurricanes job, according to a statement released by Pelini himself. The Miami Herald and Sun Sentinel had previously reported Pelini as “in the mix,” with Nebraska AD Tom Osborne denying Pelini had ever asked for permission to interview.
Texas Tech Red Raiders coach Tommy Tuberville isn’t interested either, according to The Statesman’s Kirk Bohls of Austin, Texas. This leaves just one current or former Texas Tech coach with an open interest in the Miami job, and it is a very open interest indeed.
Mike Leach has been aggressively campaigning for a coaching job, any coaching job, with his buddy Donald Trump asking Miami to give the man a chance. As far as X’s and O’s and maximizing talent go, not many schools could do any better than hiring Leach.
Though a school with Miami’s exuberant past and image-conscious present is going to want someone who can build a winner while continuing Randy Shannon’s neat and tidy program (technically, Randy Shannon built a winner while establishing Randy Shannon’s neat and tidy program, but all right), and the ending of Leach’s last gig is going to keep higher-up types nervous for quite a while.
