The Maryland Terrapins have officially announced the hiring of longtime Connecticut Huskies coach Randy Edsall to replace Ralph Friedgen.
Before taking over UConn in 1999 and leading them from Division II to a BCS game last night, Edsall was George O’Leary’s defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech in 1998. Many Tech fans rue that defense to this day, as it ranked 50th in the nation and gave up 41 points in the season’s first game against the Boston College Eagles, one of Tech’s only two losses that season. Still, the Jackets finished with a top-10 AP ranking in ‘98, so it couldn’t have been all THAT bad.
The offensive coordinator of that ’98 team? Ralph Friedgen.
Edsall went 74-70 during UConn’s Division I and FBS period. Maryland has yet to announce the rest of Edsall’s coaching staff, and no major reports have emerged on that front.
