The Miami Hurricanes overcame a 10-point deficit with 43 seconds left in the game to come away with the 69-62 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers in the first round of the ACC Tournament.
The Hurricanes had just 8 points through the first 16 minutes of the second half but then put together a miraculous last few minutes of play to send the game to overtime. Virgina had four turnovers in the final 30 seconds while not being able to advance the ball past half court and missed a handful of free throws to give Miami the opening.
Malcolm Grant had a game-high 16 points for the Hurricanes while Mustapha Farrakhan led the Cavaliers with 14 points. Both teams struggled shooting from the field, with Miami connecting on 39% and Virginia hitting 40%. The Hurricanes threw up a barrage of 3-pointers with 29 and made 10 of them.
Miami gets the number one seed North Carolina tomorrow at noon eastern in the second round. UNC came away with a win in the two team's only meeting this season, 74-71 victory at Miami in late January. Freshman Harrison Barnes drilled a 3-pointer with six seconds left to help the Tar Heels overcome a 14-point deficit midway through the first half. Five Hurricanes reached double figures, but outside of Adrian Thomas, Miami could not get any help off the bench. Center Reggie Johnson had 11 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.
