The Georgia Tech defense was thoroughly humiliated on Saturday against Middle Tennessee, giving up 510 yards of total offense en route to an embarrassing 49-28 loss.
The star of the show for the Blue Raiders was running back Benny Cunningham, who piled up 217 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, averaging a whopping eight yards per carry. In all, Middle Tennessee amassed 264 yards on the ground and was 7-for-11 on third downs, leading Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson to deliver a harsh yet honest assessment of his defense to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
"That’s probably as bad a tackling game as I have ever seen," Johnson said. "We really haven’t tackled very well for two weeks now. It looks like we’re running in mud."
After a performance like this one, the road ahead won't get any easier for the 2-3 Yellow Jackets, as they head to Clemson Saturday to face the No. 15 Tigers.
