Behind guard DeMario Mayfield's 14 points off the bench and some key late defense, the Charlotte 49ers outlasted the Kennesaw State Owls in a back-and-forth contest to claim their 10th victory of the early season, 66-52.
Neither team was able to pull away at any point during the game, trading leads and holding on to margins that were often less than four or five points. But Charlotte began to pull away late, going on an 14-2 run to close the game starting with 7:35 remaining to lock up the victory.
The 49ers kept it close all game with strong production from their bench players, with E. Victor Nickerson's 11 points despite not getting the start adding to Mayfield's production. J.T. Thompson also had eight points off the bench.
Kennesaw State forward Andrew Osemhen led the Owls with 14 points but, as one of only two Owls to score in double figures, his production was not enough to get Kennesaw State its second victory. Owls guard Myles Hamilton added 12 points.
