Prized import quarterback, Star Jackson from Alabama, didn’t play last night after being “suspended for the first half of the game due to a violation of team rules regarding 'punctuality,'” according to Chris Deighan.

Panther Talk talkers are talking about said suspension being the result of missing the team buses the night before. Jackson had also missed four days of practice last week due to the flu according to the fan forum, giving Drew Little a boost up the depth chart.

Little threw for 135 yards in 17 attempts with no major mistakes. After the game, coach Bill Curry announced: “Drew’s the quarterback.”

Georgia State’s first-ever football game was as big a success as could’ve been hoped.

The Panthers not only looked like they belonged, they dominated Shorter on both sides of the ball. They were bigger, faster, and better coached. Georgia State could’ve run nothing but read option after read option and won, but mixed in a crisp short passing game while rotating Drew Little and Kelton Hill at quarterback. Attendance figures were about 10,000 higher than expected (30,207 on hand, compared to the Braves’ 19,938). And the crowd was involved early, if a little inexperienced at times:

Shorter’s flexbone option appeared similar to Georgia Tech’s in theory, but involved a lot of tripping, stumbling, out-of-position Hawks, intruding defensive tackles, and a dropped snap or two. By comparison, Georgia State looked like a team that had been playing together for years.

And, yes, coach Bill Curry got doused.

The Dome’s got another football team, Atlanta. The Panthers look to extend their school-record winning streak next week at home against Lambuth.

According to Ken Suguira, the Georgia State Panthers’ first-ever starting lineup looks like this:

Offense: RB Rosevelt Watson, WR Sidney Haynes, WR Danny Williams, SL Jordan Giles, TE Emmanuel Ogbuehi, LT Clyde Yandell, LG Joseph Gilbert, C Ben Jacoby, RG Harrison Clottey, RT Grant King. Curry hasn’t named a starting quarterback, but all signs point to Drew Little with Star Jackson as the No. 2 backup.

Defense: DE Kalan Jenkins, NG Dion Peary, DT Christo Bilukidi, OLB Jake Muasau, OLB Robert Ferguson, ILB Evan Bostic, ILB Olufemi Opanubi, FS Brandon Jones, SS Fred Barnes, CB Brent McClendon, CB Justin Hughes.

So, Little’s starting at quarterback. That settles the only position battle that the casual Panthers fan knows anything about.

But in the following brief montage of interviews with Panthers players, Alabama transfer Star Jackson mentions being excited to take the first snap in Georgia State history. Something he wouldn’t be able to do from the bench. Could there be tension?

Though the buzz around Pantherdom is that tonight’s unveiling will sell out the Georgia Dome’s lower bowl, plenty of good seats are still available. Ordinarily that’s a dis, but we pause to reflect on the happy fact that tickets to Georgia State football are, indeed, obtainable in the first place.

Best deal I’ve found, and the one we took advantage of: buy tickets through georgiastatesports.com, using the promo code The Fan to get $9.02 tickets. Of course, scalpers will be orbiting, but it felt good to support the newest member of Atlanta football.

That number 902 seems to have been chosen for significance; it’s the area code of Nova Scotia, for one thing.

Rapper Yung Joc will be debuting a halftime Panthem that’s likely to be even more Atlanta than the team’s new fight song. You’d love to comment on “Bleed Blue,” but the school’s website has buried it behind proprietary Windows-only plugins, so it may be best to assume it sounds something like this, but with a couplet somewhere in there using whatever the most obvious rhyme for Curry is.

Star Jackson recently transferred to Georgia State from national champion Alabama after finding himself making little headway on the Tide's crowded depth chart. Could he suddenly be the best traditional quarterback in the state?

Bear with me here. We're talking traditional passers, not quarterbacks in general. This means Joshua's Nesbitt's 100-yard rushing days, impressive and game-changing as they are, don't count. At this point, Nesbitt is hands-down the state's best college quarterback until proven otherwise.

But if we're talking traditional, pro-style quarterback skills: Jackson, Nesbitt, or Georgia freshman Aaron Murray?

Recruitin': Coming out of high school, Star Jackson was a four-star dropback passer. Nesbitt was a four-star dual threat who was recruited by most schools as a safety. Murray was a four-star pro style QB, meaning this round goes to Jackson and Murray.

Coaching: Jackson is a redshirt sophomore, meaning he has two years of experience studying under Nick Saban's staff. He also ran the scout team offense his first year. Nesbitt is a true senior. His freshman year, Chan Gailey used him in much the same way Tim Tebow was used during Chris Leak's final year -- a dropback fullback. Two years of pro-style absorption seems about as relevant to our discussion as four years of unusual coaching. Points for Jackson and Nesbitt.

Arm and mechanics: Nesbitt throws a decent lob, but Murray and Jackson take this one.

Experience: Nesbitt has thrown 298 passes, almost all as a full-time starter. Jackson has thrown 18 in mopup duty. Anyway, Nesbitt.

Nine out of ten local fans would take either Nesbitt or Murray, depending on what they'd want in a quarterback, but there's no reason to think Jackson isn't right up there too. It's not like Nesbitt or Murray would be any higher on Bama's current depth chart than Jackson was. Bill Curry has been loudly hooted throughout Alabama's forumosphere for claiming Jackson was the best-looking quarterback at Bama's A-Day game, but Jackson did have the most yards per attempt that day, FWIW.

We've got a pair of Georgia State preview features going up throughout the week, so let's learn five things about the Shorter University Hawks.

Shorter is a member of the NAIA's Mid South Conference. They're based in Rome, Georgia and went 6-5 last year.

They lost their opener at number 12 West Alabama on August 27.

The Hawks run a "triple-option offense similar to Georgia Tech's." [Pedantic note about triple option being a play, not an offense.] Their defense plays a 3-4, which we can say is similar to Georgia Tech's without getting all nitpicky.

Their head coach, Phil Jones, is 32-23 in six seasons as head Hawk. He won a series of very acronymmy awards in 2008.

Here's an encouraging sign for Panther fans: Shorter has never had a losing season since taking up football in 2005.
