Sure, some might be concerned about the play of the defense during the Atlanta Falcons’ Week 7 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, but Falcons’ fans have to feel good about the play of the offense. Matt Ryan looked sharper than he has all year, while the running game also contributed to keep the Bengals’ defense off balance all afternoon. When it was all said and done, the Falcons had dropped 39 points and over 450 yards of total offense on the Bengals.

The star of the show for Atlanta was wide receiver Roddy White, who hauled in 11 catches for 201 yards and two touchdowns. He also snared an impressive and important two-point conversion. On Monday, White joined The Pollock & Bell Show on 790 The Zone to talk about his performance, an effort that likely will garner him offensive player of the week honors for Week 7. Excerpts from the interview follow (via: SRI)

Whether he is having fun this season lining up in different positions on the field:

"Yeah, they are doing a good job of moving me around and not let teams get a key on me and not letting them double me. That goes to the guys upstairs game planning on a weekly basis, seeing teams and the defensive coordinators in what kind of look they are going to give us. Those guys are doing a good job. They are moving me around and I’m getting catches and stuff like that and making people miss, turning it into big plays."

Whether he tries to elevate his game even more when he is playing against other marquee receivers:

"Yeah I try to step my game up. Every time I go out there I want to be the best wide receiver on the field and show everybody that I am one of the upper-echelon wide receivers in this game. So any time I get a chance to go out there and compete against those guys I am going to compete and just go out there and try to flex my muscles and help us get a win."

On the team coming right back and responding after the Bengals stripped the ball from him and ran it back for a touchdown:

"We felt like we had to answer with a score after that. I really felt bad after I fumbled that ball and let them go down and score, because we had just got that kickoff return, we had just kicked it out to the 50, so that was kind of tough on me or whatever but we bounced back as offense. Nobody panicked or nobody was pressing or anything like that. We just knew we had to go out there and execute and go down the field and score."

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) – Matt Ryan, Roddy White and Michael Turner all had big days, as the Atlanta Falcons weathered a big second half by the Cincinnati Bengals to take a 39-32 victory.

Ryan completed 24-of-33 passes for 299 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception. Ryan’s efforts mostly went to White, who caught 11 balls for 201 yards and two scores.

Turner carried the ball 23 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns for the Falcons (5-2), who rebounded from last week’s loss in Philadelphia. Atlanta was playing without cornerback Dunta Robinson, who was inactive after suffering a concussion against the Eagles, when he was involved in a violent collision with receiver DeSean Jackson.

Carson Palmer was 36-of-50 for 412 yards and three touchdowns for the Bengals (2-4), who recorded 29 points in the second half — 22 in the third quarter — but fell to their third consecutive loss.

The Falcons held a 24-3 advantage at halftime, but watched it disappear as the Bengals’ offense came to life.

Cincinnati scored every time it had the ball, opening the half with a 33-yard field goal from Mike Nugent. After Atlanta punted, Cincinnati took over at its own 12. Palmer completed passes of 18, 16 and 30 yards — to Chad Ochocinco, Terrell Owens and Jordan Shipley, respectively.

Owens capped the drive with a 19-yard touchdown reception, and finished with nine catches for 88 yards. All three receivers had big days, as Ochocinco ended with 10 catches for 108 yards and a score, while the rookie Shipley had six catches for a career-high 131 yards and his first touchdown.

Following Owens’ score, Ryan was intercepted by Leon Hall at the Bengals’ 38. Palmer hooked up with Shipley on a 64-yard score, though the two-point conversion failed, keeping the Falcons’ lead at 24-19.

Atlanta had good field position after Eric Weems returned the ensuing kickoff 55 yards to the Bengal 46. But White fumbled on the first play of the series, and Adam Jones recovered before running it back 59 yards for a score.

The Falcons challenged the ruling, but the call was upheld as Cincinnati assumed a 25-24 lead with 1:16 left in the quarter as the two-point try again failed.

Atlanta bounced back with a touchdown drive that spanned into the fourth quarter. The Falcons went 74 yards in eight plays, the last of which was Ryan’s 11-yard pass to White. Ryan hooked up with White for a two-point conversion, which gave Atlanta a 32-25 lead less than two minutes into the frame.

The Bengals got onto Atlanta’s side of the field before Cedric Benson fumbled. It was a crucial turnover, as cornerback Brian Williams returned the ball near midfield. Turner’s three-yard rush around the right end got Atlanta into the end zone with 4:33 on the clock for a 39-25 advantage.

Cincinnati needed a quick score, but it took three minutes before Palmer found Ochocinco for an eight-yard touchdown. The Bengals’ onside kick was unsuccessful, but they used their two remaining timeouts to get the ball back with 28 seconds remaining. However, they began at their own four and Palmer was sacked to end the game.

Atlanta scored on the game’s opening possession, as Ryan capped an eight-play, 83-yard drive with a three-yard strike to Brian Finneran. Nugent kicked a 20- yarder with 22 seconds left in the quarter, capping a drive during which Atlanta safety Thomas DeCoud was injured. He hit his head as he dove into Benson, and was somewhat stunned by the collision.

Matt Bryant’s 45-yarder 90 seconds into the second quarter gave Atlanta a 10-3 lead, which was nearly increased on the Bengals’ next touch. Benson appeared to make a catch before fumbling as he adjusted the ball, and Brent Grimes ran it back for a score. Cincinnati challenged and won, as officials ruled it an incomplete pass.

Still, Atlanta scored after the Bengals punted, as White hauled in a 43-yard touchdown with 11:06 remaining. The Falcons scored again with 1:05 left, when Turner took it in from two yards out to end an 11-play, 83-yard march.

White recorded his second career 200-yard game. He had a career-high 210 receiving yards last season against San Francisco…Palmer recorded his third career 400-yard game. He had a career-best 440 yards in 2006 against San Diego…Cincinnati gained 469 yards, compared to 452 for Atlanta…The Falcons have won the last three meetings with the Bengals and four of six dating back to 1990.

Falcons WR Roddy White had the best game of his career today, hauling in 201 yards worth of catches, two touchdowns, and a two-point conversion. He had at least four or five highlight-worthy catches, but this one might’ve been the most amazing. At the beginning of the second quarter, we didn’t yet know we’d entered Madden 11 territory, but this catch signaled these teams were about to make good use of Gus Johnson after all:

White has gotten noticeably better every year of his career. Last year, he confirmed his status as one of the league’s ten best receivers.

So far this year, that’s not quite good enough. Can you name ten players at any position who’ve done more to help their teams win than White has for the Falcons? NOTE: player must have forced a game-saving fumble at some point.

White earned team monthly MVP honors for his work in weeks one through four. He’s the solid favorite to win the second-quarter award, and has to be considered a very strong All-Pro contender going into Atlanta’s bye week.

Looking around the dome I am amazed that there are so many empty seats. Talk about your fair-weathered fans. The Bengals drove down the field taking some time off the clock, however it resulted in a touchdown keeping their chances alive.

Palmer has lit up the Falcons secondary throwing for 402 yards and 3 touchdowns. Dunta Robinson needs to get healthy…Dear God.

The Falcons word this year has to be resilience. After letting 22 consecutive points run up on the board in the 3rd quarter the Dirty Birds responded in the 4th to put the lead back out by 14 with 4 minutes left.

To say it’s been an easy game would be an utter lie. Atlanta has had to work hard for this game. Cincinnati is a good football team so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them get right back in it with a limited amount of time left on the clock.

Roddy White is just near his career high in yards at 201 for 11 receptions. Keep an eye on him as we near the end of the game.

Terrell Owens continues to outperform his more boisterous (is that possible?) teammate against the Atlanta Falcons. Owens has seven catches for 81 yards and touchdown grab that Erik Coleman might remember for a while. You’ll notice Coleman in the highlight. He is playing the role of “little kid” trying to tackle a grown man.

Carson Palmer has targeted Owens throughout the day as his chemistry with Chad Ochocinco – despite eight catches – has been a mixed bag.

Owens has said playing for only $2 million this year is like him playing for free but the Bengals were the only team to give him the chance to play this year. He obviously still has gas left in the tank as evidenced by his performance today. Though it’s worth noting the Falcons are without Sean Weatherspoon and Dunta Robinson due to injuries.

It’s 32-25 and the Falcons lead in the fourth quarter.

Responding to a team with renewed energy can be extremely difficult. It takes mental toughness and an overall drive to win the game. The Falcons did just that as they drove the ball down the field for a touchdown to quell the Bengals previously 22 unanswered points.

The game, however is not over. The Bengals get the ball back and have been looking good on offense. The defense has to step up if the Falcons are to win this game. If not it looks like another tough one for the Dirty Birds.

Roddy White now has 9 receptions for 186 yards and 2 Touchdowns.
