A week after suffering their second loss of a disappointing post-championship season, the Alabama Crimson Tide knocked the upstart Mississippi St. Bulldog back down a peg. The Dawgs entered with the same 7-2 record as the Tide, already their second-best win total since 2000.

The Tide outgained MSU by 153 yards, but it was their mid-game barrage that made the difference. With Alabama leading only 6-3 until halfway through the second, the Tide tore off three touchdown plays of 45 yards or more in the next 12 minutes of game time. As a team that’s made its mark by winning tight, low-scoring games, the Bulldogs simply couldn’t keep pace.

Alabama gets a freebie against the Georgia St. Panthers on Thursday as they rest up for the Auburn Tigers on Nov. 26, while the Bulldogs get the Arkansas Razorbacks on Nov. 20.

South Carolina Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier has won his eighth SEC East title, and he did it against the team with whom he won the first seven. Carolina crushed the Florida Gators on both sides of the ball, winning in Gainesville for their first time ever. They'll take on the Auburn Tigers in the Georgia Dome on Dec. 4.

Carolina RB Marcus Lattimore had the game of his young career, pounding out 238 yards and three touchdowns on 43 touches. QB Stephen Garcia threw for 156 yards, 53 of them to WR Alshon Jeffery, and avoided throwing a pick for the first time since Sept. 25. Florida's new-look, three-quarterback offense could only produce a single touchdown, a pass from QB Jordan Reed to RB Chris Rainey.

After Florida claimed they wanted to try and run 100 plays on offense, the Cocks held them to about half that: 55. Carolina more than doubled up Florida's time of possession, and were more than three times better on third down.

South Carolina Gamecocks kicker Spencer Lanning kicked his third field goal as time expired to give the Cocks an eight-point halftime lead over the Florida Gators. Carolina has never won in the Swamp, but a win would send them to the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta to take on the Auburn Tigers. Same story for the Gators, though they’ve won in the Swamp before. All right.

Florida’s brand-new offense has completely fallen apart only two weeks after it was thought up. With two strong performances against the Georgia Bulldogs and Vanderbilt Commodores, it appeared Urban Meyer had figured out how to get his offensive talent to work together effectively, but Florida’s seven points all came on the opening kickoff return by Andre Dubose. The Gators’ offense has 51 whole yards, much of it on a single 22-yard catch by Omarius Hines.

RB Marcus Lattimore is leading the way for Carolina, with 83 powerful yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. QB Stephen Garcia has thrown for 108 with no interceptions, plus an 11-yard scramble of his own.

If Florida can’t re-reinvent its reinvented offense in the next 30 minutes, the Gamecocks will win their first game in Gainesville and their first SEC East title, with their first shot at winning an SEC title.

Need an SEC win? Just play the Mississippi Rebels. Ole Miss has now granted the Tennessee Volunteers, Vanderbilt Commodores, and Jacksonville St. Gamecocks their sole SEC victories, and in definitive fashion. The Vols posted more points on the Rebels than they did on the Memphis Tigers or Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks, and allowed fewer points than they did against the UAB Dragons.

Vols QB Tyler Bray threw for 323 yards, three touchdowns, and no picks, while Rebels QBs Jeremiah Masoli and Nathan Stanley combined for 99 entire yards and four interceptions, contributing to five total takeaways by Tennessee. RB Tauren Poole and WR Justin Hunter each broke triple digits and scored twice for the Vols.

To put it bluntly: Ole Miss is especially terrible. Both teams are now 4-6 and 1-5 in the SEC.

The 7-2, 3-2 Mississippi St. Bulldogs will be playing with full hearts, as this is their first game since the loss of DE Nick Bell to skin cancer on Nov. 2. Meanwhile the 7-2, 4-2 Alabama Crimson Tide start a three-game home stand starring our Georgia St. Panthers. Oh, and the No. 2 Auburn Tigers.

Hey, remember all those basketball scores from last Saturday? Michigan-Illinois, Navy-East Carolina, and so on? If you like defense, this is Saturday's finest showcase, with each team featuring a top-ten D.

Returning to the BCS National Championship was expected to be a tall order for the Tide this year, considering the talent they lost on defense and the SEC's bye-happy scheduling, but few predicted they'd have two losses at this point. At the same time, few predicted the Bulldogs would only have two. Both of the teams Mississippi St. lost to are currently in the BCS top five, and they have top-tier bowl hopes of their own.

The SEC East Championship Game between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Florida Gators, both 6-3 and 4-3, pits a conference juggernaut that was kind enough to join us in mid-October against a giant-killer that’s only killed one giant. Only one good team at all, matter of fact. The Cocks knocked off the Alabama Crimson Tide, yes, but did you know the third-best team Carolina has beaten is the Vanderbilt Commodores?

The Gators have scored 89 points in two games since finally getting around to installing their offense, a three-quarterback circus that operates like the kind of thing your little cousins complain about not being able to invent on NCAA 11. Meanwhile Sakerlina QB Stephen Garcia comes in with a five-game interception streak that includes two last week against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Unless Steve Spurrier has something special in store for the program he built, the Gators are in good position to reach Atlanta for the fourth time in the past five years despite their midseason collapse.

If the game were being played in Athens, the line would’ve started at 3.5 and likely ended up as a pick ‘em — even though we’re talking about a 5-5 team against quite possibly the nation’s best. Until today, I would’ve taken Georgia and the points, especially considering how strong they’ve been in Auburn. But if you can find anywhere still offering this line, take Auburn. If Newton plays, there’s no reason they can’t beat Georgia by a touchdown. If he doesn’t play, hedge it up at game time.

No. 23 South Carolina Gamecocks at No. 22 Florida Gators: This one opened with the Gators favored by 4.5, but now it’s up to 6.5. Their best win was a 10-7 squeaker over a Gators team that hadn’t installed its offense yet, and their best game might’ve been their three-point home loss to Auburn.
