In a somewhat sloppy game, Georgia was able to pull out a one point victory 73-72 over Georgia Tech. While Georgia coach Mark Fox couldn't be completely happy with his team's play he did recognize the significance of a rare road win in this series. When asked about Dustin Ware's three point basket that put the Dawgs ahead for good Fox had this to say:

“That’s certainly a big basket for our program,”

Fox also talked about the many close games the Bulldogs have been involved in early this season and their growth from it:

“The fact that we’ve been in a lot of close games, that’s good experience for us,” Fox said. “It certainly paid dividends tonight late in the game we didn’t panic, we finished the game with a timeout, never had to burn it, and I think we played like a mature group.”

On the Tech sideline disappointment reigned. However, criticism has emerged for Tech's lack of execution down the stretch. The decision to go for a quick two pointer with Tech down three where Glen Rice scored on a lay up to make the score 73-72 will be second guessed perhaps. Even worse was the decision to heave a full length of the court pass to center Daniel Miller when there was time to complete a much shorter pass and to get off a much better shot. Of course the Yellow Jackets were out of time outs and didn't have the opportunity to set anything up.

Following up an awkward exchange he had with Paul Hewitt, AJC writer Jeff Schultz asked Tech A.D. Dan Radakovich about the state of the program: We went to the finals of the ACC tournament last year,” Radakovich said. “We went to the second round of the NCAA tournament. That wasn’t a bad year.”

So you’re satisfied?

“You’re never satisfied unless you win it all,” he said. “But there was significant progress over the previous couple of years. I feel like we’re going in the right direction.”

While I am sure that Paul Hewitt has tired of his job status always being in question, it is losses like this that will prevent those questions from going away anytime soon. Schultz had this parting shot for Hewitt:

The Jackets fought back. Effort wasn’t the issue, execution was. But that has become a familiar sight.

Dustin Ware's three pointer with fifteen seconds remaining proved to be the difference in a 73-72 victory for Georgia over Georgia Tech. The victory broke a nine game winning streak for the home team in the series. Trailing by six points at the half, Georgia emerged from the locker room having made needed adjustments to their game plan. First and foremost the Dawgs came out with the intent to move the ball better against a Tech zone defense that stymied Georgia in the first half.

The added ball movement got more looks for Trey Thompkins who scored fifteen of his twenty-one points in the second half. Perhaps the biggest thorn in the side of the Yellow Jackets on this night was Dustin Ware. Ware finished with twenty-one points going seven of nine from three point range none bigger than the last one that put Georgia ahead for good. Mark Fox's team finished the game having assisted on twenty-one of twenty-seven made baskets on the night. They only turned the ball over seven times in the game. Conversely the Yellow Jackets turned the ball over fifteen times and only had thirteen assists in the game. By winning the turnover battle Georgia was able to off set a surprising Tech rebounding advantage (37-28).

In addition to Thompkins and Ware's twenty one points, Gerald Robinson scored eleven points and Sherrard Brantley chipped in nine. Tech was led by Iman Shumpert's eighteen points. Brian Oliver and Glen Rice Jr also scored in double figures with fourteen and ten points respectively.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets started fast behind eleven first half points from Iman Shumpert and lead Georia 35-29 at the half. Tech has combined some solid outside shooting with a packed in zone defense to stymie the Bulldogs who have been unable to find a rhythm against the zone. Surprisingly Tech has a decided advantage on the boards out rebounding the Bulldogs by a 21-14 margin.

Georgia was led in the first half by Dustin Ware who connected on three of four three point attempts for nine first half points. Gerald Robinson scored seven points while Trey Thompkins tossed in six of his own. Travis Leslie was the missing component for the Bulldogs in the first half having not attempted a field goal after picking up two quick fouls.

Tech has clearly been the aggressor in this match up thus far controlling the tempo both offensively and defensively. The zone defense seems to have slowed Georgia and has resulted in some long jump shot attempts from the Bulldogs.

There is a lot more than bragging rights on the line for the winner and loser of the Georgia and Georgia Tech basketball game. While former high school teammates like Tech's Lance Storrs and Georgia's Travis Leslie and Jeremy Price will sure not let the loser forget who wins, there is after all much more serious implications. How about the future of the two programs?

Georgia is often viewed as a program on the rise since the arrival of Mark Fox in Athens. Some pundits are even picking Georgia as a viable candidate to win the SEC East as soon as this season. Conversely the Yellow Jacket program is often thought of as a program that is in decline. Decline could be a harsh word but perhaps inconsistent is the better choice. Coach Paul Hewitt has seen his share of ups and downs while in Atlanta and his critics are mounting. As the AJC's Jeff Schultz writes a loss to Georgia tonight would do nothing but turn up the heat on Hewitt. When Schultz asked about the Tech program regressing it led to this awkward exchange between the writer and Tech's head coach:

When I asked Hewitt Monday if he agreed with that perception, he bristled.

"How do you want me to answer that?’ he said.

Any way you want.

"I’ll leave that up to other people. We went to the tournament last year."

Yet that was last year and gone are Derek Favors and Gani Lawal from the Tech program.

Still on the Georgia side, the game has huge recruiting implications for the Dawgs. Despite the optimism surrounding Georgia's program it was Hewitt's Yellow Jackets that won out for the services of Milton High's Julian Royal this fall. Fox and the Bulldogs were also in the running for South Atlanta's Nick Jacobs and Royal's Milton High teammate Dai-Jon Parker. Jacobs elected to play at Alabama while Parker chose Vanderbilt instead of UGA. Recruiting the Atlanta area is vital to the success of both Georgia and Georgia Tech and was one of the biggest criticisms of Fox's predecessor in Athens Dennis Felton.

So when the Dawgs and the Jackets tip off tonight there is much more at stake than just a basketball game. We are talking about the futures of the largest two programs in the state and the men that lead those programs. Then of course there is always those bragging rights also.

In preparation for tonight's tilt between the Georgia Tech and Georgia Basketball teams, AJC writer Mike Tierney takes us back in time to one of if not the most memorable game in Georgia - Georgia Tech Basketball history. The scene is set twenty years ago at the Omni in Atlanta and I remember it well. It was the night that a little used senior walk on point guard named Brian Domalik became a house hold name in the state of Georgia at least for a little while.

That Georgia Tech team came into the Georgia game with a surprising 3-3 record but with big name players like Kenny Anderson, Bryan Hill, Malcolm Mackey, and Matt Geiger. They were fresh off of a final four appearance and were expected to roll behind the star power of Anderson. Georgia entered the game not as a slouch but as the defending SEC regular season champion that was a high scoring lot that was lead by Litterial Green.

The game was an epic encounter considering that by the time the dust settled the teams had combined to score 217 points in three overtime periods. Kenny Anderson finished with 40 points and an even more astounding 55 minutes played as he never came out of the game. The game was grueling but Anderson took control in the third and final overtime period scoring eight points while leading Tech to victory.

Of course it would never have gotten to that point if not for Brian Domalik. With 24 seconds left in the first overtime and Tech trailing by three, coach Bobby Cremins drew up a would be play for Kenny Anderson. Of course Georgia coach Hugh Durham was not going to let Anderson be the one to tie the game and shifted his defense towards Anderson. The ball found itself in the hands of Domalik who let fly from several feet behind the three point arc. The result was a tie game with a mere 14 seconds left in the game.

Tech went on to win the game and Brian Domalik will always be remembered for his improbable shot in the wake of adversity.

The (5-2) Georgia Bulldogs travel to Atlanta to take on the (4-3) Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets as they prepare to renew their rivalry on the hardwood. Tech comes into this game having lost its last two contests, an 80-76 loss to Syracuse in the Legends Classic championship game in Atlantic City N.J., and a 91-71 defeat at the hands of Northwestern in the Big Ten-ACC challenge. Conversely Georgia comes in having won their last two games, a 61-58 victory over Manhattan in the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, and a 66-64 win over UAB in Athens last Friday. Tech comes in having won its last three games at home.

Typically the home team has held the advantage since the game moved back to campus sites and away from the Omni which had hosted the game for 14 seasons prior to 1995. Since the game moved, the home team has won every contest but one. Ten years ago Georgia went into Alexander Memorial Coliseum and came away with a 75-70 victory. Tech hasn't won in Athens since 1976.

Georgia is led by preseason SEC player of the year in Trey Thompkins who is averaging 16 points and 7.8 rebounds per contest despite playing in only four of the Bulldogs first seven games. Thompkins hurt his ankle at the end of October and didn't return to action until the opening game of the Old Spice Classic. The Bulldogs have three other players that are averaging double figure points in Gerald Robinson (15.4), Travis Leslie (15.4), and Jeremy Price (11.3).

The Yellow Jackets are led by a trio of guards in Brian Oliver (14.0), Iman Shumpert (13.7), and Glen Rice Jr (11.1) who all average double figure points. Tech needs Shumpert to pick up his play as he is only hitting on 37% of his shots and is shooting a paltry five of twenty six (19%) from three point range.

The game is scheduled to tip off at 7pm at Alexander Memorial Coliseum and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.
