Yep, went triple-reportedly on that one, because the report that Vanderbilt is expected to hire Maryland Terrapins offensive coordinator is coming from The Washington Post, which has already gotten this story wrong once. Just a couple days ago they reported Gus Malzahn had accepted Vandy’s offer, setting both Vandy football fans up for disappointment.

Still, it’s at least more realistic-sounding than that Malzahn flight of fancy, which was kind of a crazy idea by Vandy itself in the first place. Not to say we weren’t all rooting for it to happen, but still.

WaPo says Franklin could be announced tomorrow, and negotiations are underway today. Franklin would be the second coach-in-waiting to join the SEC in the past week, after Texas Longhorns defensive coordinator Will Muschamp gave up said position to become Florida Gators head coach.

Franklin has coached at Kansas State, Green Bay, Idaho State, Washington State, and various other spots in addition to Maryland.

Auburn Tigers offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn has turned down the Vanderbilt Commodores head coaching job, a reported $3 million contract offer, according to AuburnSports.com (and confirmed by ESPN’s Chris Low). No official word yet.

If these reports are true, Vandy will likely turn to previously reported fallback plans Maryland Terrapins offensive coordinator James Franklin and Stanford Cardinal associate head coach Greg Roman. Failing to land one of the nation’s most coveted offensive minds would be a major disappointment for Vandy, but upon further review this really was the case of the brilliant nerd coming a little closer to landing the prom queen’s number than he should’ve.

Hey pretty lady:

Malzahn will get more head coaching offers, maybe even within the current national hiring flurry, and in the meantime a raise from Auburn for staying. Oh, and he’ll get to coach Cam Newton in the BCS National Championship Game. Vandy will hire a hard-working coach nobody’s ever heard of, who will trot out well-coached, overmanned players who will stay far out of trouble. You heard it here first.

The Washington Post’s Matt Bonesteel is reporting Auburn Tigers offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn has accepted the head coach offer made by the Vanderbilt Commodores. The offer was reported to be $3 million per year — no word on whether that’s the figure Malzahn is believed to have agreed to.

Malzahn is weeks away from coaching Cam Newton and the Tigers in the BCS National Championship Game. It’s not every year that a team heads to a title game with its Frank Broyles Award-winning coach on his way to a conference opponent, but that’s the report.

Vandy’s other considerations were Maryland Terrapins offensive coordinator James Franklin and Stanford Cardinal associate head coach Greg Roman. If they’ve indeed hired Malzahn, the typically undermanned Dores will have landed one of the nation’s most sought-after coaching prospects.

If the reported Gus Malzahn offer doesn’t work out, the Vanderbilt Commodores are expected to offer either Maryland Terrapins offensive coordinator James Franklin or Stanford Cardinal associate head coach Greg Roman, according to The Tenneseean’s Jeff Lockridge.

Lockridge notes Franklin has interviewed twice with Vice Chancellor of Athletics David Williams and has been in curiously high spirits all week, though he could just be geeked about the Terps Military Bowl against ECU? The Washington Post’s Eric Prisbell reports Franklin may receive an offer today. Williams confirmed that Franklin is a candidate.

Prisbell had previously mentioned Franklin as a candidate along with former Miami Hurricanes coach Larry Coker and Temple Owls coach Al Goden.

Franklin coached wide receivers for the Green Bay Packers in 2005. Since then he’s worked as OC for Kansas State and the Terps, before then working as a position coach of various positions at various smaller colleges.

Roman’s name has popped up less frequently. He’s in his second year at Stanford after stints with the Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens.

Based on the picture presented by all these reports, it looks as if Vandy has decided to take one big shot at a big name, and if the Malzahn thing doesn’t work out then they’ll offer a guy something closer to the traditional Vandy price range.

We knew Frank Broyles Award-winner Gus Malzahn was going to be a popular candidate for various head coaching jobs, but did we expect Vandy to make a move? According to a report at VandySports.com that's been sort of ... addressed in a way by The Tennesseean's Jeff Lockridge, Malzahn has been offered something like $3 million per year to take over the Vanderbilt Commodores football program.

According to VandySports, "Malzahn was in Nashville Wednesday night, formally interviewing for the position with the search committee," and this would be a larger contract than any Vandy coach has ever received.

College football fans like to assume Vandy will always hold down the SEC basement, but the school has the money to purchase a down-the-road SEC Championship if it really wants to. With a $2 billion endowment that's bigger than any two other SEC schools combined, the only question is whether it's willing to invest in its athletic department or not.

Making a legit offer to a legit SEC coaching prospect would be a sign Vandy suddenly cares about football. It's not like Nashville can't be a good college football town if the program suddenly takes itself seriously.

Malzahn turned Auburn's offense from one of the nation's worst into one of its best in only two years, though it's hard to say how much of that is due to Cam Newton. If Malzahn can put points on the board at Tulsa, as he did at a record-setting pace, he could do it at Vandy. If the school is actually all-in, of course. And Malzahn would want to be assured of that before signing.
