The Charlotte Observer's Darin Gantt reports the Carolina Panthers have narrowed their head coaching search to four names, all of them NFL defensive coordinators: Rob Ryan of the Cleveland Browns, Ron Rivera of the San Diego Chargers, Perry Fewell of the New York Giants, and Greg Manusky of the San Francisco 49ers.

Ryan's is the most exciting name on the list. He's the brother of New York Jets coach Rex Ryan and son of '85 (and so forth) Chicago Bears coach Buddy Ryan -- like the rest of his family, he's a character. Between him and Raheem Morris, the NFC South could quickly become a very entertaining place.

The apparent commitment to defense is interesting; it's the team's offense that underperformed in league-worst fashion this season. The defense was actually not all that bad, especially considering they were on the field all day. These things change from year to year, and it's not like a team would bring on a head coach just to fix a specific unit. But you'd think the tendency here would be to look for an offensive-minded head coach, considering the team's weaknesses.

Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson took some questions from the media today, addressing the team’s head coaching search. Richardson said the team has had no contact with Stanford Cardinal coach Jim Harbaugh, who’s rumored to be in the running for at least two NFL jobs after reportedly crossing the Michigan Wolverines off his list.

The Panthers are expected to draft Stanford QB Andrew Luck No. 1 in the 2011 draft, and many have expressed how cute it would be if Carolina could import a package deal. They’ll also need to import several offensive linemen. Moving on.

Richardson mentioned “an up-and-coming assistant coach” as being his primary field of interest. (Hey, might that include current Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey? If you can’t beat ’em…)

Richardson also addressed financial concerns — boosting an assistant will certainly be cheaper than it would be to hire, say, Bill Cowher. The only major rumor as far as Carolina’s coaching quest goes is the team’s supposed interest in Cardinals assistant Russ Grimm. Hey, an assistant!

Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson announced head coach John Fox will not be retained as head coach after the end of the 2010 season. His last game will be this weekend’s NFC South battle against Carolina’s nearby rival Atlanta Falcons.

The Falcons need the win to assure themselves of the NFC’s No. 1 seed. The Panthers are 2-13 and have secured the first draft pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Fox will leave Charlotte with a .500 record if the Panthers lose in the Georgia Dome, having put together a 73-72 mark to this point. The highlight of his tenure was a Super Bowl near-win against the New England Patriots.

Arizona Cardinals assistant Russ Grimm is the most-rumored candidate to replace Fox. Due to his many local ties, former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher had been a popular potential hire, but he may not be interested in this job if others are available.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher is reportedly interested in returning to coach an NFL team in 2011. He also reportedly has a "wish list" of teams he'd prefer, listing the New York Giants, Miami Dolphins, and Houston Texans.

The Carolina Panthers have been the rumored potential destination most associated with Cowher's name in recent months, owing to John Fox's hot seat and Cowher's North Carolina ties. He played college football at N.C. State, married a former Wolfpack basketball player, and currently lives in Raleigh, and his daughter plays college basketball at nearby Elon University.

After yesterday's collapse against the Philadelphia Eagles, during which coach Tom Coughlin watched his special teams make two unbelievable errors in the closing minutes, it's not hard to imagine the Giants making a switch. The Dolphins and Texans will both miss the playoffs again, and Cowher is a much hotter item than either Steve Spagnuolo or Gary Kubiak, but there have been no major reports of any of those jobs approaching a transition phase.

Head coach John Fox has led the Carolina Panthers to the highest highs of their short existence, taking the team to a 2003 NFC championship and last-minute Super Bowl loss to the New England Patriots (you know, the Janet Jackson game!). He's gone 73-69 in nine seasons, but all indications are that he's done after two more games, the final one taking place in the Georgia Dome.

Pat Yasinkas gathers resources and intel on where the Panthers might look after turning Fox loose. The Charlotte Observer's Joseph Person notes the big names that will get obvious solicitation by Cats fans -- Jon Gruden and Bill Cowher -- but doesn't think the team wants to spend the kind of money that would drag them away from easy TV jobs after shelling out $6 million in 2010 on Fox. We think we know the kind of money Gruden just turned down in Miami. It was supposedly $3 million, according to various reports.

Adam Schefter has said multiple sources have give him reason to look for the Panthers to go after Arizona Cardinals assistant head coach Russ Grimm. Grimm was a four-time All Pro guard for the Washington Redskins, and his son Cody Grimm plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after a career at Virginia Tech. Meaning father would coach against son twice a year, and Brian Baldinger would have something to talk about for two hours every Carolina-Tampa meeting.

Fox went 7-10 against the Falcons as Panthers head coach.
