Today, we take a look at the most interesting battle heading into spring practice: the defensive backfield. Three out of four positions were held by freshman in 2010 but that could change dramatically with the two most talented recruits entering in the fray. Anthony’s Midgets unit played very well overall but it was obvious that the offseason goal was to get bigger, stronger and make more explosive plays.

Left Cornerback
RS Sophomore Brent McLendon
Sophomore Jamal Ransby

Strong Safety
Junior Demazio Skeleton
RS Sophomore Fred Barnes
RS Senior Michael Hall
RS Sophomore Kail Singleton

Right Cornerback
Junior D’Mario Gunn
Sophomore Demarius Mathews

*Projected Starters in Bold

Analysis
The core of this unit remains intact and both Gunn and Skeleton will be immediately contributors. Gunn enrolled in January and has been impressive thus far in workouts. He had high FBS interest coming out of HS until he was tripped by grades. Skeleton is at least 20 lbs. bigger than incumbent starter Fred Barnes and I look for him to make an immediate impact once he arrives from Georgia Military College in May. Jones is the vocal and emotional leader of this defense and will not likely be moved from his Rover position. Look out for Mathews as he may be the best young cover corner on the roster and he should continue to fill out his frame with quality weight. With a steady mix of quality depth, the defensive backfield should again take another step forward in 2011.

Continuing to take a look at the defensive side of the ball, the Panthers may see a shuffle within their linebacker corps to open the spring. Within the 3-4 hybrid scheme employed by defensive coordinator/mad scientist John Thompson, the LBs are required to be mobile, tackle well and be able to drop in coverage.

Fortunately, the Panthers were able to add instant contributor Mallory from Georgia Military College who is bigger, faster and able to make plays in space. This group may see some serious player movement from last year’s roster. Between disciplinary issues (Femi Opanubi has already been kicked off the team and Evan Bostic missed time in at least 2 games in 2010 due to academic and off the field issues and will miss the first week of Spring practice) to possible attrition, this group may have the most names shifting out of the rotation of any this spring. OLB Brad Chahoy was a contributor on special teams has given up football and will not be on the team. ILB Trey Ennis has exhausted his eligibility.

The younger players and new addition will have to step up and solidify a group that is filled with question marks. Who steps up and provides leadership amongst the group?

We've covered the offensive side of the ball and the special teams, now let’s take a look at the pre-spring depth chart for the Georgia State defense. This unit may have the biggest opportunity for improvement as the much-maligned defensive line was gashed in 2010. In the last four games vs. FCS opponents alone, the GSU defense gave up an average of 195 yards on the ground. GSU adds three defensive lineman to the rotation and will have the benefit of an additional offseason to gain much needed size and strength.

Strongside Defensive End
Senior Christo Bilukidi
Freshman Roderick Thompson
RS Sophmore Austin Wiley
Freshman McClain Head

Nose Guard
Senior Khirey Karriem
Senior Dion Perry
Sophomore Terrance Woodard
RS Sophomore Eduardo Curry

Weakside Defensive End
Senior Kalan Jenkins
RS Sophomore Demetrious Shorter

*Projected Starters in Bold

Analysis
While all three returning starters along the defensive line are seniors, only Bilukidi is a lock. The 6’5, 285-lb. man-child from Ottawa, Ontario, was a force last season registering 38.5 tackles, seven TFL, five sacks and two forced fumbles. Jenkins is a converted tight end and needs to put on quality weight. He will be pushed by Shorter and incoming freshmen Thompson and Head. Walk on Austin Wiley played well in spots but will likely slide down the depth chart with the two talented freshman entering the rotation.

The biggest battle for playing time may come at the point of attack at noseguard. Karriem returns and was very active but is undersized at 270 lbs. Woodard at 320 lbs. may have the body to be your prototypical Nose. Curry returns from a season-ending foot injury suffered in the preseason and will be called upon for rotation depth as he entered last year’s fall camp at 300 lbs. Who steps in and takes the nose guard spot will determine how effective the Panthers are at stopping the run and freeing up their talented linebacking corps to roam free.

Analysis
The Panthers will lean heavily on two talented freshman to fight it out for the kicking battle as Benvenuto, who Rivals.com ranked as the country's 18th best, and preferred walk-on Ehasz will battle for the starting spot. Both are very accurate and have range past 50 yards. They pair have actually worked out together with a kicking coach in South Georgia and will come in ready to compete. The punting duties should be handled by do everything Schlechter who started fall practice as the Panthers' 4th string QB, moved to punter, averaging 44.5 yards per punt and downing 8 of his 31 inside the 20, and even playing WR catching 8 passes for 118 yards.

All three starters are back in the return game and Wilson may be the show stopper after his 97-yard return in the finale vs. Alabama. Wilson and McCray averaged 27.75 per return and both have the capability to instantly turn the field. Matthews took his lumps as the Panthers punt returner but still averaged 9.5 yards per return with a long of 47 yards.

In Part 4 of our pre-spring depth chart look for the Georgia State Panthers, we take a look at the most experienced returning unit. That’s almost weird to say with a two-year program but boosted by 3 FBS starters, the projected starting offensive line has a combined 82 games played.

Michael Davis was a likely projected starter at RG before tearing an ACL in his knee in fall practice. He will push for his starting job again and claims to be stronger than he ever has. Grant King held up very well as a RS freshman at RT and but will again be pushed by Gabriel Hampton, who has shed some weight and gained strength this offseason. Throw in an absolutely mauler in David Huey, who can play Guard or Tackle, and this is one area to focus on beginning on March 21st.

This unit will have the benefit of offseason workouts, 15 spring practices and an entire fall practice to maintain the tremendous pass protection (only 10 sacks given up in 2010 in 334 pass attempts) from last season and improve in the run game. I absolutely expect a rock solid effort and this unit emerging into one of the Panthers' top units in 2011.

In Part 3 of our pre-spring depth chart look for the Georgia State Panthers, we take a look at the best unit on either side of the ball in 2010. Asst. Head Coach/WR Coach George Pugh boasts a unit that returns 133 catches for 1674 yards and 13 TDs.

Analysis
When the Panthers run a 3 WR, 1 RB set, they are truly most dangerous spreading the field. 8 different players at the WR position caught passes in 2010 and all of them return for 2011. Danny Williams looked like a young Ed McAffrey at times last season making spectacular catches look routine. This unit is rock solid and considering Jordan Giles played the final 6 games of the year with basically 4 fingers, this unit again looks to perform at a high level again in 2011. Look for increased production and deeper throws as Williams, Haynes and Albert Wilson, who scored the lone TD vs. Alabama on an KR, strech the field vertically.

Analysis
When the Panther utilize their 2 TE set, they add two very sure handed weapons. Williams caught 16 passes for 164 yards and 3 TDs and had one of the most impressive highlights of the season as he caught a short swing pass and dragged a Morehead State defender nearly 10 yards into the endzone. Ogbuehi is an amazing find by the coaching staff and was actually a preferred walk on who earned a scholarship in 2010. Woods contribute mostly on special teams and is not an offensive contributor and Pearson could see some reps this season as he took a RS in 2010.

We continue the look at the pre-spring depth chart for the Georgia State Panthers and today we bring in to focus on the Running Backs. This may be one of the most disappointing units in 2010 as this group averaged only 72 yards per game. The overall rushing numbers for the team were better but that was mainly attributed to WR sweeps, reverses and Wildcat runs by Kelton Hill.

Starter – RS Sophomore Travis Evans: While no one back had more than 11 carries in a game in 2010, the 5’11, 185lbs Evans did the most with the offensive touches he received. He carried the ball 79 times for 382 yards and caught 14 passes for 97 yards and a TD. He also had 6 touches that went for more than 20+ yards which was the most on the team. Evans is improving in pass protection, has gained quality weight in off season workouts and is absolutely justifying an increase in workload in 2011.

Back Up – RS Sophomore Parris Lee/ RS Junior Rosevelt Watson – The reason why these two are together is that I can see no major difference in these two players. Each had 40+ carries and gained less than 175 yards total on the ground. The 5’9, 205lbs Watson is lauded by the coaching staff for his blitz pickup and Lee, who goes 5’9 and 190lbs, had the honor of scoring the first TD in GSU football history on a 4 yard plunge vs. Shorter. One of these two players have to take a step forward and demand more playing time. If not, they will be passed by incoming freshman Kyle Vorster or RS Sophomore Sam Burkhalter (30 carries, 103 yards, TD in 2010).

Impact Newcomer – RS Freshman Rendell Wilder – Wilder took a redshirt last year and at 5’8, 175lbs he may be the Panthers true home run hitter at RB.
Now that National Signing Day is in the rear view, we start taking a look at the Panthers football roster as it is currently constructed, projected movement up or down the depth chart, and who could be moving on to another destination. Today, we take a look at the starting quarterback race.

Starter - RS Sophmore Drew Little: Little was a mild suprise to start last year's opener, but people who follow the program closely were not shocked. He put time in and lost weight (was rumored to be as heavy as 260 pounds at one point). He played at 245 pounds in 2010 and is likely to show up for Spring drills at 235 or so. Little put up very good stats as a RS Freshman completing 62 percent of his passes for 2102 yards and finished with 22 total TDs.

Back Up - RS Sophmore Kelton Hill: Hill was the designated Wildcat QB on the Panthers roster and had very good success in that formation. Hill was the Panthers leading rusher with 419 yards on 60 carries. Good news if he wants to move to RB; not so much if he has to earn a spot with his arm, considering he only threw 15 total passes in 2010. He will have every have opportuity to prove he can throw the ball with accuracy as Little will be suspended for all of Spring practice and for the first four games of 2011. Will Kelton step up and grab the starting job?
