Iman Shumpert has made up his mind to remain in the 2011 NBA Draft's field of prospects, skipping his Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets senior season, the school announced Tuesday. He plans to hire an agent and start working out for NBA teams as soon as this semester's final exams are out of the way. Shumpert on the decision:

I appreciate everything that Georgia Tech has done for me over my time here. I've tried to take advantage of everything we have available, from our academic support system to our coaching staff and strength and conditioning, to help make me a better person and player. I want to thank the Georgia Tech fans for their support of our program even though we haven't always met their expectations.

Coach Brian Gregory expressed confidence in Shumpert's NBA future, praising him for continuing to attend class and team workouts while waiting to decide on going pro.

The AJC's Ken Sugiura reports that Iman Shumpert probably will wait until the May 8 deadline before announcing whether or not he will keep his name in the NBA draft or return to Georgia Tech. Shumpert's father says that his son is 50-50 on whether or not to remain in the draft and says that there is no need to rush a decision.

"Why rush?" Odis Shumpert II said. "Just go ahead and wait to the day. Then you can decide, ‘I'm in' or ‘I'm out.'"

Individual NBA team workouts can begin this Friday and Shumpert's stated goal is the first round. His father says that currently they are hearing the second round but all of that can change after workouts start. At 6-foot-5, Shumpert has the size that could lead to being successful in the NBA. As a junior last season, he led the Yellow Jackets averaging 17.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 3.4 assists.

New Tech coach Brian Gregory has made it clear that he wants Shumpert back for his senior season, but will also help assist Shumpert with the process of making a decision on the draft. Gregory has already been talking with NBA coaches and general managers to try and help gauge where Shumpert might be selected.

"There's no question that he's going to play in [the NBA]," Gregory said. "The question is, does he want to try to do that this year or wait till next year. I think in our system and the way we play, he would have an unbelievable senior year. I really do. I think he would have an All-American-type senior year."

According to Doug Roberson of the AJC, Georgia Tech guard Iman Shumpert "will likely return to Georgia Tech" for his senior season if it looks like he wouldn't be drafted until the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft. Shumpert announced his decision to enter the draft on Monday but decided to not hire an agent, leaving the door open for a possible return to college.

DraftExpress.com has Shumpert projected as the fourth player to go in the second round, while NBADraft.net has him completely off their board.

Shumpert met with former Yellow Jacket Gani Lawal of the Phoenix Suns according to Roberson. Lawal put his name in for the draft after his sophomore year and chose to return for one more season, and advised Shumpert to do the same.

The Illinois native led the Jackets in scoring, assists, rebounds, and steals for the season and would bring a much needed veteran presence to next year's squad if he chooses to return.

Iman Shumpert, perhaps the lone bright spot of a 2010-11 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets basketball season that saw the team finish with a losing record, get obliterated in the ACC Tournament, and close down its beloved Thrillerdome, has announced he'll enter his name into the 2011 NBA Draft. While that doesn't mean the rising senior is necessarily gone, as he has yet to hire an agent, it's still not going to inspire much confidence in the coming season of Tech hoops.

Shumpert says he reached the decision before meeting new head coach Brian Gregory. Since the All-ACC second-team point guard did not sign with an agent, he's free to play for Tech next year if he doesn't like what he discovers about his draft standing.

In three seasons at Tech, Shumpert has reached No. 11 on the program's all-time assists list and No. 4 on the steals list -- both very impressive considering the point guard lineage the school boasts.
