The Marlins won the battle of the bullpens by scoring the winning run in the seventh inning, taking the game, 6-5, and the series.

The two teams totaled seven runs in the first inning, with the Braves ahead 4-3. Chipper Jones singled in a run and Brian McCann hit three-run home run to put them ahead. But the Marlins came back with the tying run in the second on a RBI single by Hanley Ramirez. They added another in the third on a solo homer by Gaby Sanchez.

The Braves came back to tie the score at four in the fourth on a solo homer by Dan Uggla, his first against his old team. Atlanta's big chance to take the lead came in the sixth when they loaded the bases with two outs for pinch hitter Brooks Conrad. However, he hit a liner to center field that was snagged on a diving catch by Chris Coghlan to preserve the tie.

Florida took advantage in the seventh with the eventual winning run on a RBI single by John Buck. Fredi Gonzalez chose to remain with left-hander Eric O'Flaherty despite facing three straight right-handed batters, all of which received singles.

Brandon Beachy had a rough outing, allowing five runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings, walking four and striking out eight. Beachy fought control issues that came back to bite him two of the four times on the walks, not to mention the two doubles and one home run allowed. It is a second straight below average start for Beachy, but he did show the strikeouts are still there.

Ricky Nolasco didn't fare much better for the Marlins, allowing five runs on six hits in six innings, walking one and striking out four. He was pulled after just 70 pitches, but Edwin Rodriguez attempted to go the lefty-lefty route with Randy Choate against McCann, which backfired with a single and eventually the bases loaded. It didn't help that Nolasco allowed a double and two homers.

McCann went 2-4 with a homer and three RBI. Chipper and Uggla each had one RBI, Uggla's on a homer. Freddie Freeman added a double and walk, and Jason Heyward recorded two walks for a total of 11 on the season.

Sanchez went 2-5 with a home run and RBI for the Fish. Ramirez went 3-3 with a RBI and two walks. Morrison picked up two RBI, Stanton had one with a double and Buck recorded the big RBI in the seventh.

Brian Sanches, Mike Dunn and Clay Hensley combined for three scoreless innings in relief of Nolasco. Leo Nunez pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

Behind Beachy, Peter Moylan got the final two outs in the sixth. O'Flaherty allowed the winning run in the seventh on three singles. Scott Linebrink finished his inning with two outs. Jonny Venters and Craig Kimbrel each pitched a scoreless inning, both striking out two.

He has allowed two runs in each start against the Mets and Astros, going seven and eight innings, respectively. Nolasco posted the best K/BB of his career last year at 4.45, and while he only has six strikeouts in 15 innings so far this season, he hasn't walked a batter. He has always had solid control and this year seems to be no different. Look for a main combination of fastballs and sliders with a few splitters and curves mixed in.

Chalk up Brandon Beachy's previous start to facing the Phillies. He allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings. Beachy is throwing a large amount of breaking and offspeed stuff early, and while it resulted in seven strikeouts against the Brewers, it only gave him two strikeouts against the Phillies. Beachy will hit his bumps but he will be fine.

Chipper Jones has a .464 mark with four homers against him, while Brian McCann is a .361 mark with five homers. After that, there isn't much to look at. Nate McLouth and Martin Prado have had experience against Nolasco, but neither has a batting average above .280. Jason Heyward is 2-4 with a triple and walk.

Josh Johnson's Near No-No:
The Marlins ace lived up to the billing once again with 7.1 shutout innings on one hit, walking three and striking out nine. Johnson took a no-hitter into the eighth and received the first out in the inning before Freddie Freeman's double down the third-base line broke it up.

The big right-hander induced nine ground balls to two fly balls and two line drives. Pitch count became a factor in the later innings as he reached 105 at the end of his outing, but Florida manager Edwin Rodriguez was sticking with Johnson. Three walks helped lead to the high count, but none of the three reached second base.

Johnson threw his sinking fastball 50% of the time, averaging 93 MPH and touching 95. He kept it over the plate but down in the zone for the most part, resulting in the high number of grounders. But his slider was the most effective, receiving 12 swinging strikes on the 30 sliders thrown. As you can see from the zone graphic below, he spotted his slider better than any pitch, keeping it low and away to righties consistently. It's no wonder seven of his nine strikeouts came on the pitch.

Marlins starting pitcher Josh Johnson took a no-hitter into the eighth inning as Florida shut down the Braves and evened the series with a 5-1 win.

Johnson had a no-hitter through 7.1 innings before giving up a one-out single to Freddie Freeman that blooped over Greg Dobbs' head down the third base line. At 109 pitches, he was immediately pulled after the hit. Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez had confidence in Johnson's ability to finish the game if it remained a no-hitter despite the pitch count, but it wasn't to be.

Johnson walked three and struck out nine. He never allowed a Braves batter to reach second base.

The Marlins tacked on five runs off Braves starter Tim Hudson in the first three innings. Chris Coghlan led the charge with three hits, including a double, and two RBI. Johnson and Hanley Ramirez added a RBI single apiece. Logan Morrison capped the scoring in the third with a solo homer.

Hudson allowed five runs on seven hits in six innings, walking two and striking out two. He induced 17 ground balls to two fly balls while recording zero line drives. He had a mix of hard hit balls and soft grounders, with most of them being soft grounders in the first couple innings. Five runs is never a good thing, but it was about the best five-run outing you could have.

Cristhian Martinez pitched two scoreless innings in relief. George Sherrill followed with a scoreless ninth.

The Braves' lone run came on a Chipper Jones solo homer in the ninth. The RBI was his 1,500th for his career. He is ranked 51st on the all-time list and is nine away from Mickey Mantle for 50th.

Marlins starter Josh Johnson is carrying a no-hitter into the eighth inning in the second game of the series with the Braves. Florida leads through seven innings, 5-0.

Johnson has no hits or runs through seven innings, walking three and striking out nine. No Brave has yet to reach second base. And it's not like he's tailing off due to fatigue; Johnson struck out Jason Heyward and Dan Uggla to end the seventh.

The one issue for Johnson is pitch count. He is at 105 through seven innings, throwing 68 for strikes. Johnson is a big guy who constantly hits the 100+ mark in his starts, so it shouldn't be an issue for the eighth inning, but if the no-hitter continues into the ninth, he could be looking at a 120+ mark.

Johnson will face Alex Gonzalez, Freddie Freeman and the pitcher's spot in the eighth, which favors him considerably. The ninth could be the true test if he reaches it.

This game is the perfect example of why baseball is still played on a field and not a computer. The Marlins have gotten to Tim Hudson for five runs through four innings as Florida leads, 5-0.

Chris Coghlan got the Marlins going in the first inning with a leadoff double. After Omar Infante grounded him to third, Hanley Ramirez singled him in. The Marlins loaded the bases with no outs in the second on two singles and a walk, and Josh Johnson singled in a run for the second one. Coghlan followed with a two-run single down the line for four runs.

Logan Morrison homered in the third for Florida's fifth run.

Hudson allowed runs in each of his first three innings before receiving a scoreless fourth. There has been a mix of hard hit balls and soft grounders through holes, but Hudson's command has been fairly good. He has nine groundouts to one flyout.

On the other side, Johnson has a no-hitter through four innings. The only baserunners have been walks by Chipper Jones and Brian McCann. He has five strikeouts.

Josh Johnson has pitched to more contact through two starts this season, recording the highest ground ball rate of his career in 12.2 innings, while posting a tiny K/9 for him. His fastball count is up while his slider count is down, which could be a reason considering his sinking fastball. Johnson is another big righty the Braves will have to deal with, but he has twice the talent of Volstad and is considered one of the best pitchers in the league. He gave up two runs and three runs against the Mets and Nationals, allowing a total of seven hits in the two starts.

Tim Hudson is picking up where he left off in 2010, allowing just four runs total through two starts against the Nationals and Phillies. He recorded 18 groundouts against the Phillies in his most recent outing. Hudson's ground ball rate hasn't quite reached his high total from a year ago, but it's not far behind and is still among the best. He is throwing fewer sinkers and more splitters, but both have been effective so far.

Opposing Numbers:
As is the case with most teams, the Braves have some pretty weak numbers against Josh Johnson. Chipper Jones is far and away the best at 9-30 with one double and one RBI, including seven walks. Brian McCann is 8-34 with two doubles, a homer and two RBI. Martin Prado is 6-24 with two RBI. Alex Gonzalez has two hits and two RBI. Jason Heyward is 2-4.

The Marlins' numbers against Tim Hudson aren't any better. Hanley Ramirez is 11-41 with two doubles and three RBI. Greg Dobbs is 5-19 with seven RBI. Chris Coghlan is the best at 6-11 with a double. Omar Infante is 4-13 while Gaby Sanchez is 2-13. Small sample, but Mike Stanton is 2-3 and Logan Morrison is 0-5.

What to Look For:
A pitcher's duel. Both starters are among the best in the league, and Johnson could be considered the best outside Philly. Neither team has had much luck against the opposing pitcher, either, so look for scrappy play and a lot of small ball when batters reach base.

Tommy Hanson Returns to Form:
After two rough starts that brought about concerns over his arm and stuff, Hanson responded with seven shutout innings on four hits in a 5-0 win over the Marlins. He allowed two singles and two doubles in the outing, walking two and striking out five.

Hanson induced 12 ground balls to two fly balls and only one live drive. He threw 58 strikes over 98 pitches. His fastball command was much better than his previous two starts, and his velocity increased to a range of 92-94. Whatever the reason, Hanson looked like a different pitcher in his third start, and it quieted concerns about other things that might be going on (at least for me).

The Game Changer:
Nate McLouth's RBI double in the third inning put the Braves ahead, 1-0.
