In a game where the Braves had things under control early, Tommy Hanson was able to settle in right off the bat and cruise to seven shutout innings. The 7-0 Braves win gave them the series and sends them home on a good note.

Hanson faced 26 batters and retired 21 of them. The rest reached on four singles and one walk. Despite this, the Padres actually reached scoring position three times, including third base once, but they never could score. The four batters faced with runners in scoring position: groundout, strikeout, single, strikeout. The single only advanced the runner to third. He struck out 10. This is how you pitch a shutout.

Hanson was almost strictly fastball/slider, which is good to see because it means he has the fastball working. He lived on the outer half with all of his pitches, consistently hitting the outside corner at 90-93 with the fastball.

For the second straight day, Chipper Jones put the Braves on the board in the first inning with an RBI groundout following a leadoff double by Martin Prado, worth .029 WPA. The Braves scored in the first inning in all three games this series.

They unloaded in the second inning for five runs. An error by Brad Hawpe scored two runs, worth .172 WPA, the biggest swing in the game. Chipper tripled in two runs, worth .104. Brian McCann capped it with an RBI double, worth .030.

The Braves cruised after that as Hanson shut down the Padres. He gave up just four baserunners following the five-run second inning for the Braves.

Stat of the Day:
Hanson's last double-digit strikeout game was June 10, 2010.

The Game Changer:
Brad Hawpe's error resulted in two runs for the Braves in the second inning, worth .172 WPA.

Tommy Hanson kept the pitching dominance going with seven shutout innings and 10 strikeouts as the Braves ended the road trip on a good note, winning 7-0.

Hanson pitched seven shutout innings on four hits - all singles - with one walk and 10 strikeouts. He induced seven groundouts to three flyouts, throwing 113 pitches, 74 for strikes. It's the most strikeouts for Hanson since June 10 of last year. This is back-to-back solid outings for Hanson now, who seems to have his fastball command back to where it was. Even if it is the Padres, it's good to see his stuff as sharp as it is right now.

The Braves started the scoring in the first on a Chipper Jones groundout RBI following a Martin Prado leadoff double. This marked a run scored for the Braves in the first inning every game this series. They exploded for five runs in the second inning thanks in large part to a two-run error by Brad Hawpe, which led to all five unearned. Chipper tripled in two and Brian McCann added an RBI double.

Jason Heyward added an RBI single in the ninth for insurance.

Chipper went 1-4 with a triple and three RBIs. McCann went 2-3 with a double and one RBI, his first double of the season. Heyward went 2-5 with an RBI. Prado added two hits, including a double. Nate McLouth did the same. Freddie Freeman also added a double.

Behind Hanson, Cory Gearrin made his second career appearance, pitching a perfect inning and striking out one. Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless inning with a walk.

For the Padres, Mat Latos allowed six runs on seven hits in five innings, walking one and striking out five. Five of the runs were unearned, but he certainly helped cause them. It was another shaky outing for Latos, who has yet to turn a corner this season since returning from the disabled list.

The Braves and Padres face off in the rubber game of a three-game set on Wednesday beginning at 3:35 on SportSouth. Game one of the series went to San Diego in 13 innings on a walk-off home run, but Atlanta rebounded with a dominating 8-2 win in the second game.

Braves Lineup:
1. Martin Prado, LF
2. Jason Heyward, RF
3. Chipper Jones, 3B
4. Brian McCann, C
5. Dan Uggla, 2B
6. Freddie Freeman, 1B
7. Alex Gonzalez, SS
8. Nate McLouth, CF
9. Tommy Hanson, SP

Padres Lineup:
1. Cameron Maybin, CF
2. Jason Bartlett, SS
3. Ryan Ludwick, LF
4. Jorge Cantu, 3B
5. Brad Hawpe, 1B
6. Orlando Hudson, 2B
7. Will Venable, RF
8. Rob Johnson, C
9. Mat Latos, SP

Tommy Hanson (28 IP, 3.21 ERA, 3.34 FIP, 3.53 xFIP, 2.57 BB/9, 7.71 K/9, 46.1 GB%, 7.4 SwStr%)
(55 FB%, 22.5 SL%, 16 CB%, 6.5 CH%; 42.2 Swing%, 81.4 Contact%)
vs.
Mat Latos (16.2 IP, 5.94 ERA, 6.35 FIP, 3.99 xFIP, 4.86 BB/9, 10.8 K/9, 44.2 GB%, 11.6 SwStr%)
(57.6 FB%, 28.3 SL%, 7.6 CB%, 6.6 CH%; 44.2 Swing%, 72 Contact%)

Hanson pitched seven solid innings against the Giants last time out, allowing one run on three hits while walking one and striking out seven. His strikeouts and ground balls seemed to return to their norms for the first time this season, as he induced more fly balls than ground balls while striking out seven. Hanson's fastball velocity and command continues to be the focus of his starts, and it went well against the Giants, as did the slider and curve.

Latos has yet to find his groove since returning from the disabled list, allowing three runs, five runs and three runs while going no more than 6.1 innings. His most recent was 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits while walking five and striking out seven. The five walks and 107 pitches led to an early night for Latos, which is rare for a pitcher as efficient as he usually is. But despite the low innings, high walks and five homers allowed, he remains a strikeout machine with a K-rate over 10.

Opposing Numbers:
Two of the big hitters for the Braves, Chipper Jones and Brian McCann, have a combined two hits in 18 plate appearances against Latos. But Martin Prado is 3-9 with a homer, Dan Uggla is 2-6 with a double and RBI and Alex Gonzalez is 2-5 with one RBI.

Several Padres hitters have hit Hanson well. Cameron Maybin is 3-7 with two doubles, a homer and two RBIs. Jorge Cantu is 3-8 with three RBIs. Will Venable is 2-5 with a homer and three walks. Chase Headley is 3-8 with a double and triple. Alberto Gonzalez is 2-6 with a double.

What to Look For:
Hanson rebounded in his last start and is looking for the same against a poor Padres offense. He can use his fly ball tendencies in Petco Park and focus on strikeouts. However, the Braves may be counting on him a lot with Latos going for the Padres, even if he is struggling at the moment.

Several storylines dominated an 8-2 win for the Braves, a victory that evened the series in San Diego.

Jair Jurrjens pitched his first career complete game, allowing two runs on nine hits over nine innings, walking two and striking out four. He threw 114 pitches, including 81 strikes, and induced 14 groundouts.

At a couple points during his outing: through two innings, Jurrjens had 11 pitches and 10 strikes. Through five innings, he threw 46 pitches, including just 10 balls. It was one of the most efficient outings of his career - perhaps the most efficient considering it was his first complete game.

Chipper Jones hit a two-run home run in the first inning, and the two RBIs gave him 1,509 for his career, tying Mickey Mantle for 50th all time. The milestones continue to come in for Chipper this season.

David Ross hit two home runs and drove in four. Both shots came on fastballs left up by Aaron Harang, and both were deposited in the left field stands, one in the upper level. Ross now has as many home runs as Brian McCann.

Chipper's homer in the first was worth .196 WPA, the biggest swing in the game. Ross' was worth .091 in the second inning. The Padres answered in the fourth on Orlando Hudson's RBI triple to bring them to within two, worth .105 WPA.

Alex Gonzalez singled in two in the sixth for a .048 WPA mark, followed by a two-run home run by Ross for a .042 mark. It was easy cruising for the Braves after that due to a seven-run lead until the ninth.

Stat of the Day:
Jair Jurrjens reached 103 pitches in the ninth. Aaron Harang reached 103 in the sixth.

Jair Jurrjens pitched a complete game with one run allowed, and David Ross backed him with two home runs, as the Braves defeated the Padres, 8-2.

Jurrjens went nine for the first time in his career, allowing two runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out four. He gave up three doubles, one triple and five singles, and only one single was hard hit. Jurrjens was a model of efficiency, keeping a low pitch count throughout, and ending at 114 with 81 strikes. He induced 14 groundouts to six flyouts. Jurrjens didn't reach Aaron Harang's pitch count until the ninth inning.

The Braves started the scoring early in the first with a two-run home run by Chipper Jones. Ross added a solo homer in the second inning for a three-run lead.

The Braves poured it on with five runs in the sixth. They loaded the bases with no outs and scored two on a single by Alex Gonzalez. Ross followed with his second home run, a two-run shot for a seven-run lead.

The Padres scored their lone run in the fourth on a RBI triple by Orlando Hudson that was misplayed by Nate McLouth in center field.

Ross went 2-4 with two home runs and four RBIs. His two long balls matches fellow catcher Brian McCann for his season total so far. Chipper went 2-5 with a home run and two RBIs. His two RBIs gives him 1,509 for his career, tying him with Mickey Mantle for 50th all time. Gonzalez added two hits, including a double, and two RBIs, and also added several more impressive defensive plays.

Aaron Harang was largely ineffective for the Padres, not able to command his fastball at all and was forced to throw his breaking stuff a lot. All three home runs allowed came on fastballs in the zone. He allowed eight runs in six innings. Evan Scribner pitched two scoreless innings behind him, and Ernesto Frieri added a scoreless inning.

The Braves have taken advantage of an ineffective Aaron Harang for eight runs in six innings as they lead, 8-1.

With the Braves up 3-1 after five, they scored five runs in the sixth. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with no outs, and Alex Gonzalez singled in two. After Nate McLouth struck out, David Ross hit his second home run of the game for a seven-run lead.

Ross now has two home runs and four RBIs on two fastballs left up in the zone by Harang. He has as many homers in one night as Brian McCann does all season.

It was obvious through five innings that the Braves weren't done with Harang considering he has zero fastball command and has been forced to use his breaking stuff throughout. He has allowed eight runs on seven hits in six innings, walking three and striking out two.

Jair Jurrjens cruised through five, throwing just 46 pitches and 10 balls while allowing one run on five hits and no walks. He gave up just one hard hit ball through the five innings - a triple by Orlando Hudson that was misplayed by Nate McLouth in center and costing the Braves the run. Jurrjens hit a bit of a snag in the sixth by allowing a double and walk, but he got three outs to end the inning at 66 pitches. He's certainly on pace for at least eight innings.

Two early home runs have propelled the Braves to a 3-0 lead through three innings against the Padres.

The first was a two-run home run by Chipper Jones in the first inning following a Jason Heyward walk. The two RBIs gave him 1,509 for his career, tying him with Mickey Mantle for 50th all time. This comes just a day after he recorded his 500th career double. The milestones seem to be racking up the day.

The second home run came in the second inning when David Ross turned on a high fastball to the upper level in left field for a solo shot. This gave Atlanta a three-run lead.

Jair Jurrjens is working very efficiently, throwing three scoreless innings on three soft singles with no walks and one strikeout. He threw just 11 pitches in the first two innings, including 10 strikes. He sits at 26 with 21 strikes through three innings. He has induced four groundouts to three flyouts.

Following a rough 13-inning loss to the Padres in the series opener on Monday, the Braves are looking to bounce back with a win to even the series Tuesday. Game time is 10:05 on SportSouth.

Braves Lineup:
1. Martin Prado, LF
2. Jason Heyward, RF
3. Chipper Jones, 3B
4. Dan Uggla, 2B
5. Freddie Freeman, 1B
6. Alex Gonzalez, SS
7. Nate McLouth, CF
8. David Ross, C
9. Jair Jurrjens, SP

Padres Lineup:
1. Cameron Maybin, CF
2. Will Venable, RF
3. Ryan Ludwick, LF
4. Nick Hundley, C
5. Jorge Cantu, 3B
6. Orlando Hudson, 2B
7. Brad Hawpe, 1B
8. Alberto Gonzalez, SS
9. Aaron Harang, SP

Jair Jurrjens (13 IP, 0.69 ERA, 3.20 FIP, 3.55 xFIP, 2.08 BB/9, 6.92 K/9, 44.1 GB%, 6.2 SwStr%)
(65.5 FB%, 21.8 CH%, 12.6 SL%; 45.6 Swing%, 86.2 Contact%)
vs.
Aaron Harang (24 IP, 1.88 ERA, 1.92 FIP, 3.38 xFIP, 1.88 BB/9, 7.88 K/9, 33.3 GB%, 8.2 SwStr%)
(65.4 FB%, 23.2 SL%, 9.5 CH%, 1.9 CB%; 44.1 Swing%, 80.8 Contact%)

Jurrjens has posted two solid starts since his return from the disabled list. His most recent was one run allowed on seven hits over six innings against the Dodgers, walking two and striking out six. Three walks to 10 strikeouts is good to see for Jurrjens so far, and hopefully the walk rate remains solid throughout the year. He has shown great command on all of his pitches, but especially the fastball/changeup combination. He has allowed a pretty high contact number, however, and the changeup hasn't led to many swings and misses.

Harang was widely considered to be a great pickup for the Padres this offseason due to price and the fact that he can allow all the fly balls he wants at Petco Park. The signing has lived up to the billing so far, as Harang has allowed no more than two runs while going six innings in each of his first four starts. He has been a model of consistency, and his control has been great, walking just one over his last 12 innings. His most recent start was two runs on nine hits in six innings against the Cubs, not walking any and striking out five. Yes, the fly ball rate is extremely high, but Harang has yet to allow a home run, and that includes two starts on the road.

Opposing Numbers:
Nate McLouth is 3-24 against Harang, but Dan Uggla, Alex Gonzalez and Chipper Jones all have great numbers against him. Gonzalez is 4-6 with a double, triple and four RBIs. Uggla has two home runs. Jason Heyward is 2-3 with a double and triple.

Jorge Cantu is 2-17 and Brad Hawpe is 3-15 against Jurrjens, but other Padres have had success. Ludwick is 4-11, Hudson is 3-8 with a homer and three RBIs, and Will Venable is 2-5 with a triple. Cameron Maybin has two hits and Nick Hundley has one.

What to Look For:
The Braves may have their hands full with Harang. He has become a very solid and consistent pitcher for the Padres so far, and he doesn't issue walks.
