More yacks were the special of the day for the Braves as home runs led to another win. Three long balls put Atlanta ahead for good, giving them a 5-2 win and series win over the Phillies. The Braves now sit 3.5 back of Philly.

The Braves struck for two runs in the second inning when Freddie Freeman singled and Alex Gonzalez homered, worth .203 WPA, the biggest swing in the game. The Phillies scored their first run in the third when Jimmy Rollins singled, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Placido Polanco, worth .101 WPA.

Freeman put the Braves back ahead by two in the fifth with a solo homer, worth .116 WPA. The Phillies tried to answer in the sixth by putting runners on the corners with one out with singles by Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez, but Wilson Valdez grounded into a double play to end the threat, worth -.174 WPA.

Jair Jurrjens gave up a single to Pete Orr with one out in the seventh, prompting his exit and the entrance of Eric O'Flaherty, who induced a double play by Rollins to end the inning, worth -.086 WPA. In the eighth, Nate McLouth walked to lead off the inning and came around to score when Eric Hinske launched a two-run home run for a 5-1 lead, worth .079 WPA.

The Phillies climbed back to within three in the eighth when Shane Victorino tripled and scored on a single by Polanco, worth .046 WPA. With two outs, Ibanez singled to bring the tying run to the plate, but John Mayberry flew out to end the inning. Craig Kimbrel put two on with one out in the ninth, but a strikeout and flyout ended the game.

Stat of the Day:
Jonny Venters allowed three fly balls in his inning of work. He came into the game with two allowed all season.

The Game Changer:
Alex Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in the second inning to put the Braves ahead, 2-0, worth .203 WPA.

WPA Winners:
(ATL) Jair Jurrjens: .240
(ATL) Alex Gonzalez: .179
(ATL) Eric O'Flaherty: .086

WPA Losers:
(PHI) Michael Stutes: -.097
(PHI) Brian Schneider: -.060
(PHI) Jimmy Rollins: -.054

The Focus:
Jurrjens went to 4-0 in his first five starts with another solid performance. He held the Phillies to one run on six singles and two doubles in 6.1 innings, inducing 10 ground balls to seven fly balls, totaling 91 pitches. It's perhaps a testament to his maturity more than anything, because he didn't have his best stuff in this game, sitting a tick below normal with the fastball and having brief lapses in command. He also had a less-than-stellar slider working, but the changeup remained good. He never gave the Phillies a chance to score after the doubles, and they had to work for the one run by manufacturing it.

Three home runs backed another solid effort from Jair Jurrjens as the Braves beat the Phillies in the rubber game, 5-2.

The Braves scored all five runs on three long balls. Alex Gonzalez hit a two-run shot in the second inning to put the Braves ahead, 2-0. After the Phillies scored a run in the third on an RBI single by Placido Polanco, Atlanta came back with a run in the fifth on a solo homer by Freddie Freeman.

Jurrjens and Co. kept the score 3-1 through seven innings, and the Braves added two insurance runs in the eighth when Eric Hinske hit a two-run home run off the bench for a 5-1 lead. The Phillies answered with a run in the home half when Shane Victorino tripled and scored on a single by Polanco for a 5-2 score, where it remained.

Freeman went 3-4 with a homer, RBI and two runs scored. Gonzalez went 1-3 with a home run and two RBIs, and he left late in the game with a slight groin strain. Hinske had two RBIs on a home run. Nate McLouth had a single and two walks. Martin Prado went 1-3 with a walk.

The 2-5 hitters in the Braves lineup went 1-15 with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Jurrjens allowed one run on eight hits in 6.1 innings, walking one and striking out two. He allowed a single to Pete Orr with one out in the seventh and was pulled for Eric O'Flaherty, who induced a double play to end the inning. Jurrjens induced nine groundouts to five flyouts, throwing 91 pitches, 54 for strikes. He didn't have his best stuff, including a fastball that sat 88-91, but he showed flashes of good movement and location, and he worked with a good ground ball rate.

Jonny Venters had easily the worst outing of his season so far, yet he allowed just one run on three hits in one inning. He entered the game having allowed just two fly balls all season, but he induced three in this inning. He left two on with a three-run lead.

Craig Kimbrel shut the door with a scoreless ninth.

Cole Hamels allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out nine. All three runs came on two home runs, and he pitched well otherwise, inducing five groundouts to one flyout. Michael Stutes gave up the Hinske home run in the eighth.

Polanco had two hits and two RBIs. Victorino went 2-4 with a triple and run scored. Rollins scored the other run with a single and walk.

Despite sporting less-than-stellar stuff, Jair Jurrjens has allowed just one run through five innings as the Braves hold a 3-1 lead after five.

Atlanta's first two runs came in the second inning on a two-run home run by Alex Gonzalez on a grooved changeup by Cole Hamels. The other run came in the fifth inning on a solo homer by Freddie Freeman on a fastball down the middle.

The Braves have two other hits - singles by Freeman and Martin Prado. Freeman is 2-2 with two runs scored, a homer and RBI. Gonzalez has once again proved to be very valuable, hitting a go-ahead home run and making several big defensive plays at short.

Jurrjens has allowed one run on five hits in five innings, walking one and striking out two. Two of the hits are doubles, but Jurrjens has held the Phillies to one run when Jimmy Rollins singled, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Placido Polanco.

Jurrjens' fastball has sat 88-91, which is a tick below normal for him, and he has left several up and flat. He has also spotted several of them well and showed good movement at times. The changeup has been pretty good so far, but the slider hasn't been seen often.

Hamels is being bit by the home run bug, allowing all three runs on two long balls. He has allowed five hits through five innings with no walks and six strikeouts. He has yet to give up a flyout despite the two home runs.

The Braves and Phillies will do battle in the rubber game of the three-game series in front of a national audience as the two teams host the game of the week on ESPN. Game time is 8:00.

Braves Lineup:
1. Martin Prado, LF
2. Jason Heyward, RF
3. Chipper Jones, 3B
4. Brian McCann, C
5. Dan Uggla, 2B
6. Freddie Freeman, 1B
7.
Phillies Lineup:
1. Jimmy Rollins, SS
2. Shane Victorino, CF
3. Placido Polanco, 3B
4. Ryan Howard, 1B
5. Ben Francisco, RF
6. Raul Ibanez, LF
7. Wilson Valdez, 2B
8. Dane Sardinha, C
9. Cole Hamels, SP

Jair Jurrjens (29.2 IP, 1.52 ERA, 2.69 FIP, 3.47 xFIP, 1.52 BB/9, 5.46 K/9, 52.2 GB%, 7 SwStr%)
(61.6 FB%, 21.2 CH%, 17.2 SL%; 50.5 Swing%, 86.2 Contact%)

vs.
Cole Hamels (40.2 IP, 2.66 ERA, 2.44 FIP, 2.78 xFIP, 2.21 BB/9, 8.85 K/9, 49.5 GB%, 11.1 SwStr%)
(49.4 FB%, 23.6 CH%, 21.2 CT%, 5.7 CB%; 47.2 Swing%, 75.9 Contact%)

Jurrjens is pitching to much more contact this season, leaving some to wonder whether he can sustain such a high level of pitching. It's pretty apparent he won't sustain a 1.52 ERA, but a 1.52 BB/9 compared to a career average of 3.15 leaves some to wonder whether he will blow up eventually. His command has been beyond anything we have seen from Jurrjens, and his ground ball rate has also helped offset such a large increase in contact. Whether it holds up remains to be seen, but the Braves are enjoying it while it lasts.

Hamels went the distance in his last start, allowing one run on five hits in nine innings against the Nationals, walking one and striking out six. After allowing six runs in his first start of the season, Hamels has allowed no more than three runs in any start, including two shutouts and one one-run game. The most notable stat from this is a major drop in home runs allowed, currently sitting at two through 40.2 innings. He pitched seven shutout innings in a win against the Braves in their last series together.

Opposing Numbers:
Dan Uggla has ugly numbers against Hamels in his career, going 6-40 with a double and homer. Brian McCann has fared much better at 12-40 with six doubles, one homer and 11 RBIs. Martin Prado is 10-35 with three doubles and a homer. Chipper Jones is 9-27 with four doubles, two homers and six RBIs. Alex Gonzalez is 3-15 with a double and homer. Nate McLouth is 2-9 with a double. Jason Heyward is 2-7.

The Phillies have not fared well against Jurrjens. Jimmy Rollins is 4-26. Shane Victorino is 5-25. Ryan Howard is 7-25. Raul Ibanez is 2-11. The only hitter with success against Jurrjens is Wilson Valdez, who is 4-6.

What to Look For:
Jurrjens is pitching well right now and has previous success against these Phillies hitters. The Braves will likely need him to keep it up as they face a tough Hamels.

The Phillies turned the tables on the Braves with a shutout of their own in the second game of the series, ruining Julio Teheran's debut in a 3-0 win.

Teheran allowed three runs on four hits in 4.2 innings, walking two and striking out one. He induced five ground balls to eight fly balls and several line drives. The low strikeout total is a good indication of Teheran throwing hittable pitches. He tried to spot the fastball instead of throwing it once he fell behind several batters, and the result was a few grooved down the middle. The same happened with the changeup, which resulted in forced offerings and less of an effect for the pitch.

Overall, it was a solid effort for Teheran in his debut. I list all of these negative things, but really, he showed tremendous stuff at times, and you could see the talent oozing from his arm. First-game jitters had a lot to do with the poor command, much more so than his actual ability to command his pitches. Teheran has always shown solid command of the fastball and changeup, and he showed his lack of experience by forcing the issue once he knew he didn't have his command. But still, he gave up just three hits and threw plenty of great pitches.

On the other side, Kyle Kendrick shut out the Braves over five innings in a spot start, allowing just two hits with one walk and three strikeouts. He induced five ground balls to seven fly balls while throwing 69 pitches, 41 for strikes. Kendrick has more wins against the Braves than any other team with six, along with just one loss, and an ERA below 2.50.

The Philies scored their first run in the second inning when Pete Orr grounded into a force out that brought home a run following a walk and single, worth .016 WPA. They added their second run in the fourth when Ryan Howard crushed a Teheran fastball for a solo homer, worth .103 WPA, the biggest swing in the game. With two outs in the fifth, Jimmy Rollins walked and stole second, setting up an RBI triple for Shane Victorino, worth .077 WPA, and knocking Teheran out of the game.

Stat of the Day:
Julio Teheran is the youngest player for the Braves since Steve Avery in 1990 at 20 years old.

The Game Changer:
Ryan Howard hits a solo homer in the fourth inning to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead, worth .103 WPA.

WPA Winners:
(PHI) Kyle Kendrick: .274
(PHI) Ryan Howard: .070
(ATL) Joe Mather: .059

Julio Teheran allowed three runs in 4.2 innings and Kyle Kendrick shut the Braves down over five innings as the Phillies evened the series with a 3-0 win.

Teheran allowed three runs on four hits in 4.2 innings in his major league debut, walking two and striking out one. He struggled through first-game jitters that resulted in a lack of command, as his fastball was grooved on more than one occasion and his changeup was often forced with little effect.

Teheran threw 86 pitches, 51 for strikes. He induced five groundouts to three flyouts.

Kendrick pitched five shutout innings on two hits, walking one and striking out three. He threw just 69 pitches, but being his first start, he was pretty limited in pitch count. He induced four groundouts to five flyouts.

The Phillies scored their first run in the second inning on a groundout RBI by Pete Orr. Ryan Howard hit a solo homer in the fourth. Shane Victorino tripled in a run in the fifth for the third Philly run.

The Phillies had just five hits, as did the Braves, and Atlanta actually had more at-bats with runners in scoring position.

J.C. Romero, Michael Stutes, Antonio Bastardo and Ryan Madson each pitched a scoreless inning for the Phillies. Scott Linebrink, George Sherrill and Cory Gearrin combined to keep the Phillies scoreless after Teheran left.

Julio Teheran's night finished at 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out one. The Phillies lead the Braves in the sixth inning, 3-0.

Teheran's start began with a single by Jimmy Rollins. He came back with a flyout, lineout and groundout to end the inning. He began the second inning with a walk to Ben Francisco, and with one out, Brian Schneider singled Francisco to third. Teheran induced a ground ball by Pete Orr that scored Francisco for the first run.

A popout, flyout and groundout gave Teheran his only perfect inning in the third. That quickly ended in the fourth when Teheran grooved a fastball to Ryan Howard that he sent over the wall for a solo homer for a two-run lead. He grooved another fastball to Francisco that was fortunately caught on a line. He came back with a strikeout of Raul Ibanez for the first and only strikeout on a changeup, which was one of the few good ones on the night.

With two outs in the fifth, Teheran walked Rollins and gave up a triple to Shane Victorino that scored him for the third run, which ended his night.

Teheran's fastball was often thrown as a get-me-over type, but he held a range of 92-94 and touched 96. The changeup was thrown often, but very few had the effect he is used to seeing on the pitch, and he began forcing it early in the outing. The curve was rare but had pretty good snap when thrown.

His counterpart, Kyle Kendrick, pitched five shutout innings on two hits, walking one and striking out three. He continued a stretch of dominant pitching against the Braves, who cannot seem to figure the pitcher out.

Julio Teheran fought through early-inning nerves that led to command issues, but he only has two runs allowed through four innings as the Phillies lead, 2-0.

Teheran's first career hitter was Jimmy Rollins, who singled on a changeup. This became a trend early as he struggled locating his fastball and eventually began grooving it. This resulted in a solo homer to Ryan Howard in the fourth, who crushed a grooved fastball into the bullpen.

Teheran's changeups have had an average of around 11 MPH difference from the fastball, but they haven't fooled many hitters and have resulted in several hard hit balls.
