Brandon Beachy is improving from the oblique injury that forced the Braves starter to the disabled list 2-1/2 weeks ago, but there is still no time table for his return to the rotation. Beachy threw off of flat ground on Saturday and is scheduled to throw off of a mound on Monday.

In eight starts this season, Beachy has a 1-1 record with a 3.45 ERA. The Braves called up top prospect Julio Teheran to take Beachy's turn in the rotation the last time Atlanta used a fifth starter.

Beachy is eager to return but will likely require a rehab stint in the minors to help rebuild his arm strength. At this point, he and the Braves are playing it safe and trying not to risk re-injury.

It's finally official: Julio Teheran will start in place of Brandon Beachy on Wednesday against the Diamondbacks, according to Mark Bowman.

The No. 1 pitching prospect in baseball will get the call back up following just one start at Triple-A Gwinnett between Major League starts. He allowed two runs on three hits in 7.2 innings against Durham in that outing, walking four and striking out seven while throwing 120 pitches.

Teheran's major league debut went fairly well, allowing three runs on four hits in 4.2 innings against the Phillies, walking two and striking out one on May 7. He battled command issues due to nerves, but he showed flashes of brilliance by throwing some solid stuff.

Teheran's start on May 18 may only be another spot start. Off days have things scheduled to where he may not have to pitch again until May 31. If the Braves choose to go this route, he would be sent back down in favor of an extra arm for the bullpen. But he may also stay up and pitch the day following an off day, giving the rotation an extra day of rest. It's not known how they will handle this.

Choosing Teheran over Mike Minor is still confusing to me, but it shows two things: The Braves have a ton of confidence in the 20-year-old to bring him back up this quickly, and they apparently think little of Minor at this point.

It's looking like my prediction is terribly wrong. With Brandon Beachy on the shelf for what could be a month due to a "classic oblique strain," most expected the Braves to turn to Mike Minor as a replacement. However, that is not the case.

Everybody kept an eye on Minor's Triple-A start Sunday to determine whether the Braves would cut it short, which would have meant Minor would be the replacement considering Beachy's turn in the rotation is Wednesday. However, Minor went five innings and threw 90 pitches in a 6-5 Gwinnett loss, meaning he will not be called up.

Rodrigo Lopez is out of options and is not on the 40-man roster, and while the Braves have ways around this, he doesn't seem to be an option for them.

So that leaves Julio Teheran, who I previously said would not even be considered. Teheran last pitched Thursday, May 12, and his next scheduled start is Tuesday, May 17, so he would get one extra day of rest if called up to start Wednesday. After throwing 120 pitches in that May 12 game, he could probably use the extra day.

My reasoning for not expecting Teheran to get the call is the fact that Minor is supposed to be the spot starter. He barely lost a starting job in Atlanta and was considered the favorite by many to be the fifth starter. Continually calling up a 20-year-old prospect over Minor has to mean something in regards to Minor's future with this team.

Of course, nothing is certain yet, and Fredi Gonzalez said it would be known on Monday who the starter will be. But we do know it's not Minor, and that itself is news.

As expected, Brandon Beachy will likely hit the disabled list with a strained left oblique, but a replacement has yet to be announced, according to David O'Brien.

Beachy left Friday's game after two innings with the injury, which occurred during his at-bat in the previous inning. He attempted warmup tosses in the third inning but shut it down. It's not surprising considering you pretty much need that muscle to function as a pitcher.

Beachy's next start is not until Wednesday, meaning the Braves have several days to make a decision on who to call up to make the start. O'Brien is reporting that reliever Scott Proctor will be called up Sunday to fill a spot in the bullpen, so he will probably take Beachy's spot on the roster until Wednesday, when a reliever will have to be sent down to make room for a replacement starter.

That replacement starter is likely to be Mike Minor, who has already made one spot start this season and is sporting a 1.82 ERA in 39.2 innings at Triple-A Gwinnett. Minor was the odd man out of the fifth rotation spot in Atlanta as Beachy took the role.

But the Braves also have Rodrigo Lopez in the mix. Lopez has a 1.79 ERA in 45.1 innings at Triple-A, but he is not on the 40-man roster. The Braves have options to get around this, but it seems that Minor would be the easier choice.

Oh, and don't expect Julio Teheran to get called back up. That's very unlikely.

So there is still no timetable for Beachy's return, and there probably won't be for a while. He will sit on the disabled list for at least a couple weeks before any type of decision is made on his return. In the meantime, be glad the Braves have such incredible depth in the rotation.

As if Friday's 5-4 loss to the Phillies could not have been any worse. Braves starter Brandon Beachy was forced from the game while warming up before the third inning due to what has been announced as a left oblique strain, according to Mark Bowman.

Beachy strained the oblique during his last swing in the second inning. He tried to test it by warming up for the third inning, but he lasted just one or two warmup pitches before having to leave. Oblique strains are never good news, but they're even worse for pitchers due to the high torque in their movement. They need that rotation, meaning they need that muscle.

The Braves will evaluate Beachy on Saturday and determine what to do then, but it's likely he will hit the disabled list. The most likely option to replace him is Mike Minor, who has a 1.82 ERA in 39.2 innings, including 13 walks to 43 strikeouts. Minor made a spot start for Jair Jurrjens in April, allowing five runs in 4.1 innings to the Brewers.

Beachy entered Friday's game with a 2.98 ERA in 42.1 innings, but that is sure to increase following the three-run outing against the Phillies in just two innings. It leaves a bitter taste in Beachy's mouth due to a rough history he has with Philadelphia.
