The Braves recorded twelve hits and Tommy Hanson and the bullpen pitched well, but it was not enough in a 3-1 loss. It's tough to be too frustrated, though, especially with Brian McCann, David Ross, Chipper Jones and Nate McLouth all out of the lineup.

Atlanta took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after Freddie Freeman grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to bring in Jose Constanza from third. That was all the scoring the club would do despite having a leadoff batter reach in seven innings. The Braves were 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left ten runners on base.

Mike Stanton tied the game in the second with an RBI-single up the middle. It came on an 0-2 pitch that Hanson tried to sneak past the slugging outfielder and he didn't miss it. Greg Dobbs doubled in the third to drive in former-Brave Omar Infante to give Florida a 2-1 lead. Emilio Bonifacio homered in the fifth inning to give the Marlins a 3-1 lead they would not relinquish.

Cristhian Martinez impressed once again in long-relief. Constanza gave the team hope in the ninth inning with a 2-out infield single, but Martin Prado grounded out weakly for the final out of the game.

Atlanta still takes the series and will now head to Washington to face the Nationals in a three game series. Michael Bourn is expected to join the team and bat leadoff. Catch his debut Monday evening at 7:05EDT.

Tim Hudson won his 10th game of the season and Dan Uggla extended his hitting streak to 21 games as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Florida Marlins 5-1 in Game 2 of their three game set at Turner Field. Atlanta has gotten solid starting pitching in the first two games of the series and will be looking for a sweep on Sunday.

Tim Hudson was in complete control pitching seven innings while allowing six hits and one run. He struck out five and walked none while throwing 97 pitches on the evening.

Atlanta broke through with a four run inning in the third against Florida's Anibal Sanchez. Martin Prado staked the Braves to a 1-0 lead with an RBI single that scored Alex Gonzalez. Freddie Freeman followed with a single of his own and Dan Uggla extended the Atlanta lead to 4-1 with his 20th home run of the season.

Florida scored its lone run in the sixth inning as Emilio Bonifacio scored from second on an Omar Infante base hit to center off of Hudson. The Braves added a solo shot from Eric Hinske leading off the eighth inning.

Florida threatened in the eighth inning against Braves reliever Jonny Venters. However, Venters struck out Hanley Ramirez to end the threat leaving the bases loaded. Craig Kimbrel closed the door in the ninth with a perfect inning in a non save situation.

Freddie Freeman, Alex Gonzalez, Martin Prado, and Eric Hinske all had two hits each for the Braves. Freeman's two hits raises his batting average on the season to .297.

Tommy Hanson will take the mound on Sunday in search of his 12th win of the season. He will be opposed by Florida's Ricky Nolasco.

Brandon Beachy turned out one of the best pitching performances of his young career and Dan Uggla increased his hitting streak to 19 games with a clutch 3-run homer in the seventh inning to give the Braves a 5-0 victory on Friday night.

Beachy dominated the talented Marlins lineup for 7.1 innings and allowed just two hits and three walks. He struck out six. Not only was it good to give the bullpen a rest, but it also restored some of the confidence Beachy might have lost after two rough starts to kick off the second half of the season.

Clay Hensley pitched well for Florida before allowing the wheels to fall off in the seventh. After weaving in and out of trouble in the early innings, he worked to sit down twelve straight Braves batters and cruised along for most of the game. He gave up five hits and three runs over seven innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three.

Martin Prado led off the seventh with a single and he was followed by Freddie Freeman who delivered a single of his own to put runners on the corners with no outs. Uggla took a 0-1 slider on the outside corner and lifted it to center field. The ball cleared the wall and the crowd of 36,063 erupted at Turner Field. The homer was Uggla's 19th of the season and seventh of the month.

Jose Constanza, who was making his Major League debut in place of the injured Nate McLouth, recorded the first hit of his career with an RBI-single up the middle to give Atlanta a 4-0 lead. Freeman drove in another run in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly to bring in Constanza.

Scott Linebrink recorded the final three outs in the ninth inning to clinch a victory for Atlanta.

The Florida Marlins are a tough team to figure. They held their own against the Braves and Phillies the first two months of the season, but then had their historically awful month of June where they won just four games. Since that rough month, the team has been one of the better teams in baseball and are playing good baseball. Let's take a closer look at the 52-53 Marlins.

So you think you've got power:

Mike Stanton might have the most raw power of any player in baseball, and he's just 21-years old. He ranks near the top of all sluggers in terms of average distance on his home runs and he has hit some majestic bombs this season. If there is a downside to Stanton it would be his plate discipline. Known to be somewhat of a free-swinger, he strikes out more than he'd like to (27.6%) and could stand talk walk a bit more (9.5%). I doubt the Marlins are too upset, though. This kid can hit and will chance a game with just one swing of the bat.

Leo Nunez headlines a bullpen that has been pretty solid this year. Guys like Edward Mujica, Burke Badenhop, Steve Cishek, Mike Dunn and Randy Choate have all worked to shape up a 'pen that has been one of the worst in baseball the last few seasons.

Final words...

This will be a tough series for the Braves. The Marlins have won five in a row and our offense isn't exactly clicking at this point. The pitching matchups are in our favor, but Florida features a tough lineup capable of putting runs on the scoreboard.
