The Braves were nearly blooped-to-death on Sunday afternoon, but three home runs and a game-winning hit from Chipper Jones in the ninth inning were enough in the 6-5 victory.

Mike Minor made the start for Jair Jurrjens and was impressive. He made a few mistakes -- allowing two hits to the opposing pitcher immediately comes to mind -- but he kept his pitches down in the zone, threw strikes early and often and avoided walking batters, which has bothered him in the past. His final line wasn't great -- 5.2 IP, 7H, 4ER, 2BB, 5K -- though the Mets really didn't make solid contact all game. A strong start for Minor and he'll look to build on it in his next start.

Jason Heyward blasted a solo-home run in the second inning to give Atlanta a 1-0 lead. The shot was to deep center field and the ball carried at least 420 feet. Heyward finished the day going 1-for-2 with a walk and HBP before being taken out in the fifth inning during a double-switch. No reports if J-Hey's ankle was injured when he was hit, but some mentioned he had been limping.

The Mets took a 2-1 lead into the fourth but the Braves recently-found speed paid off. With runners on the corner and just one out, Michael Bourn grounded into what should have been a 4-6-3 double play. Instead, the center fielder busted it down the line and just beat the throw, which allowed the runner at third to score.

With the score tied, the Braves used the long ball from two unlikely sources to take the lead. Alex Gonzalez hit a monster 2-run homer and Jose Constanza followed on the next pitch with a ball that just cleared the bullpen wall in right field.

The Mets battled to tie it up in the seventh inning. With the scoreboard showing 5-5 in the top of the fifth, Alex Gonzalez singled to center field to start the inning. Constanza bunted him over into scoring position and Eric Hinske drew a walk to bring Mets Killer Chipper Jones to the plate. Chipper hit a weak grounder that made its way into right field to score Gonzalez easily.

Craig Kimbrel was not sharp in the ninth, but Dan Uggla turned in a smooth 4-3 double play to erase the leadoff batter. Kimbrel walked Jason Pridie, but Nick Evans grounded out weakly to third to end the game.

Atlanta wins 6-5 and takes a much needed series. It wasn't pretty and they were the victims of some bad luck, but they got the job done. The team will now head to Florida to start a 3-game series against the Marlins.

There was a reason the Atlanta Braves refused to deal a top-prospect at the trade deadline last week. Not only did they want to build for the future, but they also wanted insurance for their starting rotation should someone go down to injury in the final two months of the season.

Jair Jurrjens is headed to the 15-day disabled list with a right knee strain. An official announcement has not been made on the severity, but he will likely miss at least two weeks. This is the second time Jurrjens will hit the disabled list in 2011, though, fortunately, the injury has never been arm or shoulder related.

Mike Minor is the man to be brought up to Atlanta to take Jurrjens' place in the rotation. He is scheduled to start Sunday afternoon against the Mets. This is the second time this year Minor was re-called to Atlanta to replace an injured starter.

Minor has pitched very well this season at Triple-A Gwinnett. The left-handed starter went 4-5 in sixteen starts, pitching 100.2 innings in that span. He struck out 8.85 per/9 innings and only walked 2.41 in that span. Both his ERA (3.22) and FIP (3.65) were solid as well. He has pitched well in fifteen Major League starts, but cutting down on walks will be a necessity.

Dan Uggla extended his hitting streak to 26 games with an eighth inning single and the Atlanta Braves went on to defeat the New York Mets 4-1. Tim Hudson picks up his 11th win of the season and Craig Kimbrel nails down his 33rd save for the Braves.

Atlanta led 2-1 in the eighth inning but had missed on a number of scoring opportunities in the earlier innings. Jose Constanza led off the inning with an infield single. Michael Bourn then bunted a pitch that almost hit him, sacrificing Constanza to second. Martin Prado followed with his own infield single giving Atlanta runners at the corners with one out. Freddie Freeman then grounded the ball sharply to third where David Wright caught Constanza in a run down and an unfortunate second out of the inning. However, this time the Braves got a clutch hit off the bat of Dan Uggla that scored both Freeman and Prado and put Atlanta ahead by a score of 4-1.

Tim Hudson pitched seven strong innings allowing three hits and one run. That run coming on a first inning double from David Wright with two outs that scored Daniel Murphy. New York threatened in the fourth when they loaded the bases with two outs but Hudson got Josh Thole to fly out thus ending the threat.

Atlanta's first run came in the third inning when trailing 1-0 Constanza tripled home Alex Gonzalez who had led off the inning with a single. Michael Bourn followed with a sacrifice fly to give Atlanta an early 2-1 lead. The score would remain the same until the eighth when Uggla finally gave Atlanta some breathing room.

Freddie Freeman also extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a fourth inning double. Freeman finished 2 for 4 in the game with two doubles and raised his batting average to an even .300 on the season. Prado and Constanza each finished with two hits for Atlanta.

R.A. Dickey takes the tough luck loss for the Mets pitching seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs.

Tommy Hanson (11-6) takes his turn on the hill for the Braves in the second game of a three game set on Saturday. He will be opposed by the Mets Jonathon Niese (10-8)

The playoff races are heating up. This is a big series for Atlanta. Will they be able to come away with a few victories? We'll take an in-depth look inside...

The Braves need to get back in gear this weekend. They have struggled since the All-Star Break, but Chipper Jones should be back as early as Friday and the pitching matchups are heavily in our favor. Four teams -- the Phillies, Braves, Diamondbacks and Giants -- are essentially fighting for three playoff spots. Assuming the Braves can take care of business, they're guaranteed to gain a game on at least one of those teams, if not two.

The Phillies are playing four games in San Francisco and the DBacks will be hosting the Dodgers in Phoenix for three games. Scoreboard watching season is now in session!

All this aside, the most important part of this weekend is ultimately for the Braves to win. A sweep would be thinking big, but with our three best pitchers on the mound and (hopefully) having Chipper back in the lineup it is certainly doable.

Let's take a closer look at our NL East foes:

David Wright has missed a lot of the 2011 season with a back injury, but he has been on fire since coming off the disabled list two weeks ago. The All-Star third baseman has killed the Braves in recent years and has provided the Mets lineup with some punch that they desperately needed. Expect him in the lineup for all three games.

Remember when we compared facing the Nationals in Washington DC to undergoing a colonoscopy? Facing a healthy Jose Reyes in 2011 is like undergoing three colonoscopies. The shortstop recently came off the disabled list after a calf injury and has not missed a beat since returning. His speed disrupts the game more than just about any player in baseball and he has tormented Atlanta this season.
