When the Braves and Giants matched up in the playoffs last season, each of the four games played were decided by one run. In the four games played this week, three of the games were decided by one run and the other was decided by two. Atlanta came away with all three of the one run victories with a thrilling 1-0 victory on Thursday evening.

Two of the best pitching staffs in baseball faced off, and despite stellar efforts from both Mike Minor and Tim Lincecum, it was the All-Star and Cy Young winner who would fall short.

The lone run of the game came in the fifth inning. Chipper Jones took a high fastball and sent it deep into the right field seats to give Atlanta a 1-0 lead. It was a no-doubt shot and one of the better balls Chipper has hit this season.

Mike Minor struggled with command early in the game, but he was dominant after settling in. The rookie tossed six innings -- the most he's pitched all season -- and struck out nine Giants. He gave up just four hits and one walk during his start.

The Braves phenomenal trio of relievers -- Eric O'Flaherty, Jonny Venters and Craig Kimbrel -- combined to work the final three innings and allowed just one hit while striking out three. Kimbrel recorded his 37th save which ties him for the all-time National League rookie record. He is just four shy of setting the all-time mark set by Neftali Feliz in 2010.

Atlanta extends their wild card lead to six games over the Giants with the win. The team went 6-1 against the defending champions this year.

The Braves are preparing for one of the best pitchers in baseball tonight. Why not go with the best lineup, right?
↵
After weeks and weeks of Fredi Gonzalez putting out a batting order that did not utilize this team's true talent at the plate, he finally got it right. Chipper Jones is playing, Martin Prado is playing, and, most of all, Jason Heyward is playing.
↵
Michael Bourn - CF
Martin Prado - LF
Brian McCann - C
Dan Uggla - 2B
Freddie Freeman - 1B
Chipper Jones - 3B
Jason Heyward - RF
Alex Gonzalez - SS
Mike Minor - P
↵
Tonight's game against the Giants and Tim Lincecum is huge. While there are no must-wins in August, the momentum taken from this series could have a big impact on the race the rest of the way. Braves win, they're six games up in the wildcard and head into a big series against the Diamondbacks with momentum. Braves lose, they're only four games up and have lost four out of their last six games.
↵
Let's all hope for a win.

The Braves had plenty of opportunities to score off Matt Cain in the first three innings. They only plated one run. After the third? Not a single player reached until the ninth inning.

Jair Jurrjens was anything but good in his return to the mound after missing two weeks with an inflamed right knee. The righty worked through six innings, but allowed eight hits, five earned runs and two walks while striking out just one. Cristhian Martinez was solid in two innings of relief work, but Scott Linebrink blew any real chance of a comeback after allowing two runs in the ninth.

Atlanta made it interesting in the final inning with a score of 7-1. Freddie Freeman singled and Brooks Conrad walked after a Chipper Jones fly out. Julio Lugo grounded out and nearly hit into a double play, but he was able to beat the throw. Jason Heyward drove in a run with an opposite field single -- and did so off a left-handed pitcher -- to make the score 7-2. Michael Bourn hit what would have been the final out, but Orlando Cabrera bobbled the blooper and allowed another run to score.

This is where things got wild. Martin Prado with a 2-run double to bring the game-tying run to the plate in the form of Brian McCann. It appeared Mac had drawn a walk on an inside, 3-1 slider, but the umpire gave a generous strike. McCann battled a few high fastballs off before eventually striking out on a fastball at the knees.

It was fun, but in the end it would prove to be too little too late.

Atlanta will go for a win of the series Thursday night on Dan Uggla Bobblehead Night. It'll be Tim Lincecum vs. Mike Minor in a 7:10EDT start.

Freddie Freeman was the hero on Monday night. Martin Prado took over those duties on Tuesday night and led the Braves to a 2-1 walk-off victory of the Giants, their second straight game in that fashion.

The story early in the game was Randall Delgado's brilliance. He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before giving up a solo-home run to Cody Ross. The 21-year old out of Panama exited after allowing the run, but he was otherwise spectacular. He struck out four and only allowed one baserunner to reach, which came on a walk. 74 pitches, 45 strikes. The kid is going to be good, folks.

With the score tied at 1-1, each team took a turn putting up zeros in extra innings. Brandon Belt led off the tenth with a walk, but he was erased with a fly out and 6-3 double play. Dan Uggla singled to lead off the bottom half of the tenth and then moved to third on a Freddie Freeman single. Freeman would be thrown out at first after rounding the bag too widely. The Giants walked Chipper to put runners on the corners and Alex Gonzalez promptly hit into a 6-3 double play of his own.

San Francisco was unable to do anything with a one-out single in the eleventh which brought the Braves up to the plate. Jose Constanza grounded out to start the inning, but Brooks Conrad hit a pinch-hit ground-rule double down the right field line. Michael Bourn grounded out softly to put Conrad on third with two outs and Martin Prado coming to the plate.

Prado took a strike to lead off the at-bat and held off a low slider to even the count at one. Giants reliever Javier Lopez threw a belt-high fastball and Prado shot the ball into right field for the game-winning hit. The team mobbed him and Conrad on the field. Kris Medlen even broke out the water:

The Braves now have a six game lead in the wildcard race. The Phillies also lost, so Atlanta moves to 7.5 back in the NL East.

Jair Jurrjens returns from the disabled list Wednesday night to face Matt Cain. First pitch is set for 7:10EDT.

After last night's thrilling victory, the Braves and Giants will continue their four-game series this evening in Atlanta. There are a few changes for each team, with the main ones being the lack of Jason Heyward and the addition of Chipper Jones. Carlos Beltran was placed on the disabled list Tuesday afternoon and he will not be available for any of the remaining games.

Not exactly the toughest lineup for Delgado to face later tonight, but as we all saw Monday they can surprise you and score some runs. As for the Braves approach at the plate, Sanchez throws hard and strikes a lot of batters out, though he does walk quite a few as well. Wait on him and aim to stretch him out in the early innings. The Giants bullpen is pretty banged up and not nearly at full-strength.

First pitch is set for 7:10EDT.

The defending world series champions make their way to Atlanta for the first time since last season's NLDS. Who has the advantage this time around?

The last time the San Francisco Giants were on the field at Turner Field were some of the saddest moments of my sports life. It was the final time Bobby Cox would manage a game, and despite a roster depleted with injuries, the team still battled each and every night and nearly won the series.

It's time for payback.

This Atlanta Braves team is not the one the Giants faced last October. Nearly everyone is healthy, the team is firing on all cylinders despite dropping their last two against the Cubs, and they have their eyes set on revenge. The Giants have been struggling in recent weeks, and it will be the Braves job to insure those losing ways continue this week in Atlanta.

Let's take a closer look at the Giants, who Atlanta leads by four games in the wild card standings...

The "Kung Fu Panda" was looking at a short-lived baseball career before getting into great shape this past off-season and he was seen immediate results.
On paper, Carlos Beltran was a near-perfect fit for San Francisco. He was a corner outfielder capable of both hitting for power and bringing speed on the base paths -- two things the club desperately needed -- and could re-sign with the team after the season.
