As expected, Georgia Bulldogs nose tackle Kwame Geathers has been suspended for the first half of the team's next game, which is a reasonably important one. Safety Shawn Williams has also been ruled out of the first half against the Florida Gators. Both players were dinged for combative behavior that occurred during a testy game in Nashville against the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Both players are starters. Geathers has seven tackles, while Williams is third on the team in tackles and has added a pair of picks and tackles for loss.

Details on each suspension from the SEC's statement (and here's video of the Geathers play):

Upon review of game tapes of the football game between the University of Georgia and Vanderbilt University, played in Nashville, Tenn. on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive has announced that Vanderbilt sophomore center Logan Stewart, Georgia sophomore defensive lineman Kwame Geathers and Georgia junior defensive back Shawn Williams have been suspended for the first half of their team's next football games...

Geathers' action was in violation of NCAA Football Rule 2-32-1-a for fighting. By NCAA Football Rule 9-5-1-b, the penalty for violation of the rule in the second half includes suspension for the first half of the team's next scheduled game....

Williams' suspension is the result of a flagrant personal foul which occurred at the 2:08 mark in the third quarter. The action is in violation of Rule 9-1-4 of the NCAA Football Rule Book, which reads, "No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, elbow or shoulder."

Take a look below at a prime example of why Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin got their holler on after the Bulldogs' win in Nashville on Saturday night: Bulldogs' nose guard Kwame Geathers throws a solid jab at prone Commodore center Logan Stewart after Stewart clipped Geathers on a rushing play early in the fourth quarter.

Dirty pool from Stewart? No doubt. Stupid reaction by Geathers? Indeed. The difference? Upon review by the SEC, Stewart could be suspended for part or all of Vandy's game this week against Army, while Geathers and safety Shawn Williams (two personal fouls, including fisticuffs) would be subject to suspension after the bye week, i.e., the Florida game.

Take a guess as to which potential suspension could hurt the respective team more.

Also: Tennessee could use a supportive friend right now, and Houston Nutt makes his long-awaited reality-show debut without even knowing it.

College football's hottest mess of a conference got even hotter and messier this past weekend, as coaches from Gainesville to Nashville went to great lengths to one-up each other in the drama queen department. Here's all the seamy, sudsy, blisteringly profane gossip:

RELATIONSHIPS

SEPARATED. The South Carolina Gamecocks and the SEC East title, following the season-ending injury to running back Marcus Lattimore against Mississippi State on Saturday. The team's publicist characterized it as only a trial separation, pending the outcome of games at Tennessee and Arkansas; "The Gamecocks have been through a lot of changes lately," she said, "and this is really just them taking an opportunity to take stock of their lives and decide whether they're in this relationship for the long haul." Though the separation is only on a trial basis, the publicist did confirm that the Gamecocks are being allowed to see other people, including the Gator Bowl.

SPOTTED. Florida head coach (and former Auburn defensive coordinator) Will Muschamp, in an ugly shouting match with his former team, in Auburn, Ala., Saturday night. Muschamp was known to be a volatile partner in his prior relationship even in the best of times, but witnesses in Auburn said seeing his old team apparently brought back a flood of emotions. "I mean, here he is, two straight conference losses and can barely keep a quarterback healthy, and he sees them strutting around with a 4-2 record and a national title trophy," said one onlooker. "You think a guy like Muschamp can keep his cool after something like that?" For their part, the Tigers professed innocence, saying that current defensive coordinator Ted Roof was "just a friend, nothing serious" and that in spite of the ugly scene, they "wish Coach Muschamp the best."

TRANSITIONS

IN TREATMENT. The Tennessee football program, for depression, following a series of events over the last couple weeks. The team lost starting quarterback Tyler Bray to a thumb injury during its Oct. 8 game against Georgia, then got blown out 38-7 by the top-ranked LSU Tigers on Saturday; the final straw, though, was hearing from Alabama head coach Nick Saban that he "could give a s**t" about the storied Alabama-Tennessee rivalry. "This football program is in a very vulnerable place right now," said the team's therapist. "They've been beaten by a bunch of teams and abandoned by a bunch of others. We're bringing some old friends over for an intervention or two to show them the love that they need." The first such intervention is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 29 in Knoxville, where the South Carolina Gamecocks have only beaten the Volunteers once in the history of their rivalry.

LEGAL

SENTENCED. Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, to four hours of time out, for his profane tirade directed at Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin following Georgia's 33-28 win over the Commodores on Saturday. Grantham must spend the time consecutively, in his room, without access to TV or his computer, and was directed to use the time to compose an essay on the importance of keeping one's temper; however, his attorneys were able to plead the length of the essay from 10 pages down to three. Franklin will appear before the same magistrate on Thursday, where he is expected to plead not guilty to charges of aggravated tattling. "For my client to be charged at all in this incident is a miscarriage of justice, since he never even touched Mr. Richt or Mr. Grantham at any point during their respective confrontations," Franklin's attorney said. "To repeat: Not touching you, not touching you, not touching you." If convicted, Franklin could also face a period in time out.

MISCELLANEOUS

FEATURED. The Ole Miss offense, on a special "revival" episode of the Ashton Kutcher reality show Punk'd, filmed in Oxford, Miss., Saturday night. In their segment, the Rebels were allowed to score first on the second-ranked (and heavily favored) Alabama Crimson Tide before the Tide unloaded 52 unanswered points on them. The prank was finally revealed when Bama running back Trent Richardson, rumbling toward his fourth touchdown of the evening, suddenly broke into a complicated interpretive dance at the 14 yard line.

Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt claimed to have known about the joke all along; Kutcher and the show's producers denied Nutt's account of events.

Hey, cool, are we still talking about this? Yep! It's now Tuesday, which is more than two entire days past Saturday night, and we're still talking about two coaches yelling at each other after a football game. The latest bulletin: a video shared by a Nashville TV station shows just a little bit more of the other side of the story: what Vanderbilt Commodores coach James Franklin was so mad at Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator Todd Grantham about.

Franklin said a player was "rubbing it in" after the game. Most are presuming that's Shawn Williams, who also incurred personal fouls during the game. Richt fellowships, counsels and consoles. From this angle, I'm just wondering what Franklin expected to happen by letting it all out at the time instead of, like, sending an email about the player.

Grantham still looks like a real hothead.

As always, hard to imagine how anybody could not like Richt. What do Richt and Grantham talk about? Does Richt just find ways to solicit prayer requests from Grantham, hoping one day he'll get the big guy to ask for help with his rage? I don't know. You'd have to ask Mike Bobo. He probably knows the two of them pretty well.

The great James Franklin-Todd Grantham tiff of 2011: it is a story that is ongoing, whether we like it or not. The latest development sees Georgia Bulldogs athletic director Greg McGarity having a word with Grantham after the defensive coordinator's reasoned debate with the Vanderbilt Commodores coach.

From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Chip Towers:

McGarity said discussed the situation with Georgia head coach Mark Richt by telephone on Sunday, then met with Grantham face-to-face in his office at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall early Monday morning. Meanwhile, both Georgia and Vanderbilt have been asked by SEC Commissioner Mike Slive submit written reports to the league office for review.

All mostly standard protocol, of course, but it will be interesting to see what comes of this. There's no way UGA will consider taking Grantham off the sideline for a game -- you'll note their next game happens to be against the Florida Gators -- but it's not hard to imagine some sort of verbal reprimand from the SEC directed at both combatants.

There are some loose parallels between the weekend's two #COACHFIGHTS. Both are lessons in enthusiasm. The 49ers Jim Harbaugh was right in immediately admitting he was too energetic and boisterious shaking Lions' coach Jim Schwartz's hand after San Francisco beat Detroit.

In Nashville, the losing coach probably should've retained some tact, although he had the same head of steam you'd expect from winner. But that's the emerging identity of James Franklin and the new Vanderbilt Commodores: emotional, invested and passionate, except when you're 3-3 at Vandy and just a handful of plays from beating Georgia, that's not a cliche - it's a sea change in mentalities.

Franklin allegedly had beef with Grantham and Georgia regarding the play of Bulldogs safety Shawn Williams. Grudges and grumbles of this sort are almost a currency in the SEC, but they're never acted upon nor addressed the way the first-year coach Franklin decided to. As Doug Gillet points out, Grantham's brahsome explosiveness is a known commodity, as is the energy of a post-game midfield just seconds after a close game. Needless to say, there are better avenues for Franklin to air a greivance. That doesn't absolve Grantham from Hulking out, but the very last thing he was probably expecting was a lippy opposing coach looking for a debate.

Had the Commodores been able to capitalize on that blocked punt in the waning minutes of the game and upset Georgia, the narrative would be dramatically different - Richt back on the hot seat, and Franklin the fiery rookie coaching a 4-2 Vandy team with Army and Kentucky (read: bowl bid fertilizer) remaining. It's still doubtful that Franklin or any other coach can turn Vandy into in any kind of consistent winner under that administration's structure and policies, but if he's somehow doomed to become a doormat like so many other Commodore eras, he's damn sure not going to be quiet about it.

Georgia coach Mark Richt says that he has addressed Saturday's post-game incident that erupted following the Bulldogs' 33-28 win over Vanderbilt. UGA defensive coordinator and Commodore's head coach James Franklin had to be restrained after they exchanged words at midfield.

"For me, personally, I like it at the end of a ballgame when everybody can just walk across the field and shake hands and say good luck for the next one," Richt said. "Unfortunately, it didn't happen this ballgame."

Apparently, Franklin was upset at Georgia safety Shawn Williams and appeared to say something and point in Williams' direction after the game was over prompting an angry reaction from Grantham who was also allegedly upset over several cut blocks by Vandy players throughout the game. After the game, Grantham vaguely commented on the post-game incident by pledging his love and support for his players but did not comment on what he said to Franklin or what caused the exchange.

So how do we piece together what happened at the end of Saturday night's game between Vanderbilt Commodores head coach James Franklin and Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator Todd Grantham? The two, both very clearly passionate and emotional coaches, were shouting while face-to-face and had to be pulled apart by players and other coaches.

To be fair, TV cameras locked in on Grantham, so he's the one who looks much, much worse here. Who knows what sorts of cussy faces Franklin may have been making that we'll never actually see:

Seth Emerson was the first to collect quotes from Franklin, Grantham and Mark Richt. Based on the slim accounts offered by the coaches and the Franklin video below, we can deduce that Vanderbilt was unhappy with the play of safety Shawn Williams and Georgia was upset about Vandy's blocking techniques.

Here's Richt:

"I hate the fact that at the end of the game we can't shake hands and get off the field like gentlemen," Richt said. Later he added: "We are grown men and we all need to act that way. But we're also competitors."

Here's Franklin addressing the to-do after praising Georgia's fans and Richt (but not quite Grantham, of course) with vigor:
