SB Nation Atlanta - Vikings Vs.
Entering into the locker room at half time holding on to a comfortable 17-0 lead, the Falcons appeared confident. But not long after, well... the third quarter happened. A mistake here, a miscue there, and fourth-string cornerback Chris Owens being pressed into the formidable task of covering Percy Harvin all contributed to that lead diminishing to only three points.

But Matt Ryan and the offense, as they've done time and again, put together a fourth-quarter drive that would turn into seven points for the Falcons. Ryan did it with poise and ease, taking advantage of an inferior Vikings secondary. Owens would make a touchdown-saving tackle on Harvin, and one goal-line stand later the Falcons had all but sealed their victory.

Now on paper, most people wouldn't have expected the final score of that ball game to be so close. After all, these are the good Atlanta Falcons, the ones that went 13-3 in 2010 and now sit at 7-4 this season. The Vikings only have two wins to their name, a rookie quarterback, a porous secondary and were in fact missing their best player in Adrian Peterson on Sunday. It easily could have been a blowout. But should we really expect that?

Of the sixteen games played during last week, 13 of those contests, an overwhelming majority, were decided by a margin of 10 points or less. The week before that, nine of the 14 games played were won or lost by fewer than 10 points. Only the Packers, Patriots, and Saints were really able to "blow out" their opponents. In today's NFL- one that has come to be defined by parity- those blowouts have become the exception, and not the rule.

Even though the Falcons haven't really stomped an opponent since playing the Colts, there really is no cause for alarm at this stage. They're not the Green Bay Packers (hopefully you've already established this) and they're not built to blow teams out every week. This is still a team built around establishing and stopping the run. This is a team that relies on playing mistake-free football.

The San Francisco 49ers are another great example of a "small ball" football team. In fact, they're remarkably comparable to the Falcons: both have top-10 rushing attacks, top-10 defenses, and they sport the top two run-stopping units in the league (San Fran sits at No. 1 while Atlanta's group is No. 2).

Their average margin of victory? 12.66 points, and even that is somewhat inflated by a 45-point ravaging of the Buccaneers. The 49ers are 9-2, a team the national media has pegged as legitimate threats to go all the way in the postseason.

The point to take away here is that when you watch the Falcons play on Sunday, don't be surprised when the final score something like a 20-14 win over the T.J. Yates-led Texans. Don't fret your life away. At this point in time, it's how the Falcons are built, and as long as they win there's no urgent need to change that formula.

In typical Falcons fashion, this week's win was in no way convincing. However, for at least one half of football the Falcons were absolutely dominant in all phases of the game.

On offense, Matt Ryan displayed his superb ability to throw the ball today, going 27-for-34 for 262 yards and three touchdown passes. Ryan's first of those scores came on a beautiful 27-yard strike to Harry Douglas, his first of the season. The slot receiver has finally started to regain his rookie form in recent weeks and has filled in well for a still somewhat hobbled Julio Jones.

Later that half, Ryan would find Roddy White in the back of the end zone on a six-yard TD throw to put the Falcons up 14-0. While Michael Turner didn't exactly have a stellar day, White turned in another 2010-esque performance, catching 10 passes for 120 yards and the aforementioned score.

NFL Week 12 2011 Minnesota Vikings 14 @ 24 Atlanta Falcons Highlights (via PuntBrasil)

The defense also started off strong in this ball game, limiting Christian Ponder through the air and shutting down Minnesota's ground game, which was missing one Adrian Peterson this weekend. Sean Weatherspoon had an outstanding day both playing the run and in coverage, and Lawrence Sidbury also got in on the action with an impressive two-sack performance. After struggling last year, the young Sidbury appears to have found his niche as a role player on the Falcons.

And even Eric Weems got in on the action, building on a string of recent quality performances by returning a punt 42 yards near the end of the first half. That would set up a Matt Bryant field goal, giving the Falcons a 17-point lead at halftime. After that, things kind of took a Vikings turn.

Chris Owens, though he had himself a fine day, can't realistically be expected to shut down Percy Harvin- one of the most dangerous players in the league- for four quarters. One long pass would set up a one-yard Toby Gerhart TD run, and another would result in a 39-yard touchdown throw to Harvin. On a side note, I find it confusing and mildly enraging that Curtis Lofton was covering Harvin on the play (I'm looking at you, BVG).

But Owens would later redeem himself by stopping Harvin at the three-yard line on a punt return that should absolutely have gone for a touchdown. One four-down goal line stand later, the Falcons had preserved their slim lead. And then Matt Ryan- as he is apt to do- came through in the clutch and engineered a surgically precise nine-play, 73-yard drive that culminated in a three-yard TD toss to backup tight end Michael Palmer.

All in all, it was another ugly Falcons win, but a win nevertheless. Let's hope Smitty can rally that second half defense in Houston next week.

While there's still a game in hand in the division with the Saints playing the Giants tonight we still saw plenty of our three A's during the three 1PM games around the division. Both the Falcons and Panthers managed to register wins, with the Bucs surrendering a big lead late in the game to hand Tennessee the W.

The Awesome- Roddy White

For the second straight week the Falcons' WR has re-established his footing as a premier WR in the NFL. With Julio Jones on the field White tends to get lost in the shuffle a little, but with Jones still nursing an injury he's been able to really stretch his legs.

Against the Vikings he finished with 120 yards on 10 receptions and a TD. White was exactly what the doctor ordered in beating Minnesota who didn't have a reliable CB to cover him all day. Matt Ryan can be described as a 'streaky' QB, and he's definitely someone who benefits from sure hands moving the chains. When Ryan gets in a rhythm he can be extremely difficult to stop, and that's what we saw yesterday as he completed almost 80% of his passes.

The Abysmal- Tampa Bay's 4th quarter run defense

It's widely known that the Buccaneers have struggled against the run in 2011, but never was this typified better than in the 4th quarter against the Titans. In the final quarter alone Chris Johnson ran for 66 yards on just 6 carries, averaging 11 yards per attempt. This is beyond horrible by a struggling RB who hadn't topped 5 yards in more than one game this season.

Granted, Johnson is still one of the league's best RBs but for Tampa to crumble like that in the final 15 minutes was terrible and sealed their fate on Sunday.

The Asinine- Carolina making dumb decisions on defense

Facing the beleaguered Colts should have been fairly easy, but the Panthers made it way more difficult than it ever needed to be. On three key plays on Sunday the Panthers gave up 42 yards on a terrible pass interference call, let Donald Brown run for 17 yards untouched and allowed Reggie Wayne to turn a routine reception into a 56 yard TD with terrible tackling.

These three plays are punctuated in their mediocrity when you realize that this accounted for almost 1/3rd of the Colts' offense on Sunday. The 2011 Carolina Panthers will let you beat them, provided they don't beat themselves first.

Things got a little interesting in the fourth quarter but the Atlanta Falcons held on for a 24-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings to move to 7-4 on the season.

Minnesota cut the Atlanta lead to just three at 17-14 when Christian Ponder found Percy Harvin on a 39 yard scoring pass. Atlanta responded with a 9 play, 73 yard drive that resulted in a Matt Ryan to Michael Palmer touchdown to make the score 24-14. Percy Harvin then took the ensuing kick off and raced 104 yards on the kick return before being caught from behind at the Atlanta three yard line. Atlanta cornerback Chris Owens made the tackle and never quit on the play to prevent Harvin from scoring.

The Falcons' defense responded with a goal line stand that successfully that led to a turnover on downs for the Vikings and the Atlanta offense successfully ran the clock out.

Matt Ryan turned in another solid performance completing 27 of 34 passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns. Roddy White continued his recent surge hauling in 10 catches for 120 yards and one touchdown. Tony Gonzalez finished with nine receptions for 69 yards. Michael Turner led the way on the ground with 60 yards on 19 carries.

Minnesota quarterback Christian Ponder finished 17 of 25 for 186 yards and one touchdown. Toby Gerhart had a tough time in Adrian Peterson's absence running 17 times for 44 yards. Percy Harvin had a big day with eight catches for 95 yards and a touchdown.

The Falcons have now won two games in a row and travel to Houston next week to take on the Texans.

The Atlanta Falcons are still holding a 17-7 lead in the third quarter over the Minnesota Vikings in the Georgia Dome. Th Falcons fan base held their collective breath's in the third quarter as Roddy White went down from what seemed to be an injury to his right shoulder.

White got up slow and went to the bench, but all reports seem to be that the wide receiver will be able to return to the game.

The Vikings were able to get on the board with a Toby Gerhart touchdown in the third quarter, his first of the season, to get Minnesota on the board. Christian Ponder has used his elusiveness to give the Falcons defense fits and has kept plays alive.

Matt Ryan has thrown for two touchdown passes thus far as the Atlanta Falcons have a comfortable 17-0 lead over the Minnesota Vikings at halftime in the Georgia Dome.

Ryan found Harry Douglas in the first quarter on a pretty 27-yard pitch and catch to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, Ryan found Roddy White from 13 yards out to put Mike Smith's crew up two touchdowns. For the half, Ryan has 151 yards on 14-of-18 passing for the day.

The Falcons defense has done well in flustering rookie quarterback Christian Ponder thus far, and with no Adrian Peterson in the backfield the lack of playmakers on the field for Minnesota is plainly evident.

Christian Ponder is 10-12 passing for 82 yards, and Gerhart has just 23 yards rushing thus far.

The Atlanta Falcons were able to strike first in their contest versus the Minnesota Vikings as Matt Ryan found Harry Douglas for a 27-yard touchdown in the first quarter. The score gave the Falcons a 7-0 lead in the first quarter over a Vikings team who are without the services of their franchise running back Adrian Peterson.

Here is the video of the pitch and catch from Ryan to Douglas for those who missed it.

The touchdown pass by Ryan makes it 16 on the season, and the Falcons look to keep pace with the NFC South leading New Orleans Saints and push their record to 7-4 on the year. The Saints will face the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.
