Injured Braves third baseman Chipper Jones completed his rehab stint with the Rome Braves and could be activated before Sunday's game. Braves beat writer David O'Brien reports that Jones is in the clubhouse back in Atlanta as the Braves prepare for Sunday's series finale with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Jones has been sidelined with a leg contusion after taking a line drive right above the ankle during Atlanta's series in Tampa Bay at the end of May. Atlanta made a roster move on Saturday demoting back up catcher J.C. Boscan to Triple A Gwinnett and promoting top prospect Julio Teheran for a spot start in place of Tim Hudson.

Atlanta could put off Jones' activation for another day and return Teheran to the minors to make room on the roster.

After sitting out the first two games of the Braves' series against the Milwaukee Brewers, Chipper Jones is hopeful that he will be able to return to the lineup for the series finale on Sunday. Jones will be available to pinch hit on Saturday night but has been dealing with swelling in his left knee.

"Back in 15 days playing, there's going to be some residual stuff I've got to deal with from time-to-time," said Jones, who thinks an early return was well worth those two games in Houston. "We got two wins, and I was able to contribute. And (including) those two games we scored 22 runs in (the past) three games, so I'd say it was good. The guys have got some confidence now, and I'm on the brink of being able to play full-time."

Chipper's return to the lineup provided a spark for the Braves who have won three straight after losing the first four games of the season. Jones played in both of the Braves wins in Houston and then experienced swelling in his knee and had that drained on Friday. Typically arthroscopic surgery can take 4-6 weeks but Chipper returned in just 15 days.

Tell me if you've heard this one before: Chipper Jones was scratched from tonight's lineup due to fluid buildup and soreness in his surgically repaired knee. He was originally pencilled in to bat third at the Turner Field home opener for the Braves, but news came just moments ago that No. 10 is a no-go.

Jones had missed the last three weeks recovering from surgery after tearing a meniscus in his knee, although he returned on Tuesday and played very well in Houston. No word as of yet on who will replace him, but the likely bet is to move Martin Prado to third base and have Matt Diaz take over left field.

Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones returned to the lineup after missing the first four games of the season as he recovered from knee surgery on March 25, and of course he had a good game against the Houston Astros.

Prior to Tuesday's game at Minute Maid Park Jones had a .397 average with eight homers, 31 RBIs and a 1.207 OPS in 38 games. Jones returned and homered in his second at-bat and was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the Braves first win of the season.

What is more impressive is that Jones had only 25 spring training at-bats and declined to on a rehab assignment when he first became eligible to come off of the 15-day disabled list.

Having Jones in the lineup was key for the Braves getting their first win of the year:

"He’s our guy," said Braves veteran Eric Hinske. "Just that stability for him to be able to play, knowing he’s available at least. When he’s not here it’s a definite hole for us. He’s Chipper Jones, he’s one of the best, and it’s going to be huge for us."

Chipper Jones is back, folks. The Hall of Fame third baseman was officially activated by the Braves on Tuesday afternoon, sending outfielder Jose Constanza back to Triple-A Gwinnett. With Atlanta starting the season 0-4 and the fan base slowly starting to lose faith, a rejuvenated Chipper should be huge for the lineup.

Fredi Gonzalez has not givee much insight into where he expects to bat Jones, but anywhere between spots No. 2 through 6 seem possible. Given the club's current abundance of left-handed hitters, Gonzalez may get creative to try and break up the order with the switch hitting Jones.

This is great news for the Braves. Keeping their third baseman healthy is an absolute must if they hope to stay competitive in 2012, and while Jones will likely start out a bit rusty after missing the last two weeks, his impact on the batting order just makes everything come together.

Atlanta will take on the Astros this evening at 8:05 ET.

Chipper Jones is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list and inserted into the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Houston Astros. The news couldn't get any better for the Braves who need anything positive after starting the season 0-4 for the first time since 1988.

Jones had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee 15 days ago but apparently impressed Braves officials enough with his workout on Monday to avoid going on a rehab assignment to the minor leagues.

"I would have gone down [to the minor leagues] for a couple of at-bats, and I just thought it was a waste of time because six at-bats in the minors isn't going to help me be on 95 [mph fastballs] when I get back up here," Jones said. "They might as well just throw me back into the fire. And ultimately, Fredi and [general manager] Frank [Wren] left it up to me."

As bad as the Braves have been with timely hitting, Atlanta may be missing Jones' defense at third base much more. Juan Francisco was charged with three errors in Monday's loss against the Astros.

Atlanta's offense struggled mightily in the opening series against the New York Mets and badly need Chipper's bat back in the lineup.
When news dropped that Chipper Jones was injured once again, it was disheartening for a team who looks to the veteran leader for his impact both on and off the field. The team has already announced that the popular third baseman would retire after this season, and fans want to see as much of the icon as they can before he hangs it up.

There is good news ahead, however, as it appears his knee is “physically ready” and he could be back by the end of this next week. Mark Bowman writes:

Jones said he felt “real good” as he took swings against live pitching for the first time since undergoing surgery on March 26 to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. The veteran third baseman, who will turn 40 on April 24, remains confident he will be activated from the disabled list before the April 13 home opener against the Brewers.

Chipper played in only 126 games last season and has struggled consistently with injuries of one sort or another since 2004. Last year, Chipper hit .275 with 18 home runs and 75 RBI.
